RUDY: I'LL BE NEXT REAGAN
NY Post ^ | May 04, 2007 | Carl Campanile

Rudy Giuliani portrayed himself as the heir to Ronald Reagan at the first Republican debate last night, talking tough on terrorism - but struggling to present a clear and consistent position on abortion.

Giuliani, who strongly supported abortion rights during his eight years as mayor, said he would not object to the U.S. Supreme Court overturning the 1973 Roe vs. Wade decision affirming abortion.

"It would be OK to repeal it," said Giuliani, who is courting key anti-abortion voters in the GOP primaries.

But he then added that "it would be OK also if a strict constructionist viewed it as a precedent" - meaning upholding Roe vs. Wade.

"I think the court has to make that decision - and then the country can deal with it."

Giuliani was the only one of the 10 candidates onstage at the Ronald Reagan Library in Simi Valley, Calif., to say it would be OK if Roe were upheld.

“...since this is a board about politics and government, not morality?”

It is impossible to separate politics and government from morality. For example, if this were true, Clinton would not have been impeached.

You may say that he was impeached because he lied under oath. Well, why did he have to lie in the first place? What activity did he engage in before being exposed(no pun intended)?

***Just one in a dozen ways he managed to distinguish himself.

Yep, he sure did distinguish himself from actual Republicans after flipflopping twice before he would finally admit his real position.

The Gipper must have been rolling in his grave to have that fraudulent little NARAL Champion Of Choice in his shrine.

It finished already. They're re-encoding and it will go live in a minute or two. Maybe you could ping any others that might be interested in this very short clip.

Giuliani - Reagan Library Perp Walk

Well, we'll see how it works.

My re-encode to H.264 was flawless and standards-compliant. But the beginning of the video is slightly marred by their re-encoding. Maybe I should have stuck with MPEG2. Any advice welcome. I could still re-encode and re-upload but this is such a small humor clip I’m not sure if it’s worth it.

Hmm. I find it interesting how Hunter seems to be the center of the talking.

Romney made remarks about how he thought Romney did well afterward. He didn’t say anything about the performance of the other Republicans.

For good measure:

“...since this is a board about politics and government, not morality?”

Every single public official must take an oath of office. If you think morality and politics/government don’t mix, let’s examine the definition of the word ‘oath’.

Noah Webster’s 1828 American Dictionary of the English Language reads:

oath

“A solemn affirmation or declaration, made with an appeal to God for the truth of what is affirmed. The appeal to God in an oath, implies that the person imprecates his vengeance and renounces his favor if the declaration is false, or if the declaration is a promise, the person invokes the vengeance of God if he should fail to fulfill it. A false oath is called perjury.”

Now, if morality does not matter in the political arena, why would you even have to take an oath? And what is the purpose of taking the oath? I mean, if you disregarded your obligations and promises to your constituents after taking office, so what.

Whether you choose to acknowledge it or not, morality is every bit as important as the LEGALITY of issues.

The country has been "dealing" with "the court's decision" for 30 years, and it has killed a cool 25 million people. When the court's decision is flat wrong, that and only that is the problem. And anyone without the gravitas to acknowledge that is a moral coward and political lightweight, not the next Ronaldus Magnus.

(groan)

I really wish you'd stop this habit of trying to tell me what I think.

Please--quote where I wrote "morality is less important than the legality of issues."

You can't. Because I never wrote it. Because I don't believe it.

But there is no national morality in this country, just as there is no national religion, the way there are national laws. And we are discussing issues of law and government. As I wrote explicitly before, it's not about the morality that brings one to a position that's important, it's the position. THAT is what is up for discussion.

You can ignore what I'm actually writing all you like, but don't pretend we're having a dialogue when you can't show the respect of responding to what I'm actually thinking and expressing, as opposed to what you want me to think so you can roll out your responses.

"I could put down a laundry list, but I think a lot of conservatives have forgotten what conservatism truly is. For one thing, it's not about religion."

Thank you for that last part! True indeed!

Rudy was only the front-runner because of his name recognition. Now that his past and his views are coming to light, he is finished.
