Crash on I-5 in Mission Viejo takes family's three kids (Jorge Miguel Romero)
The Orange County Register ^ | May 4, 2007 | KIMBERLY EDDS

Posted on 05/05/2007 8:34:25 AM PDT by TheDon

Lori Coble beamed as she posed for the camera with her husband and their three small children. Katie was still a baby, perched on Lori's hip. Kyle and Emma – in matching white shirts, jeans and flip-flops – grinned as they crowded on their dad Chris' lap.

"Kyle, Katie and Emma – the crazy monkeys" as the Ladera Ranch family's Web site proclaimed. The kids grew up so fast.

The dream was abruptly shattered about 1:10 p.m. Friday when a big-rig slammed into the back of the family's 2006 Chrysler Town & Country minivan on the southbound Santa Ana (I-5) Freeway north of Oso Parkway.

The three Coble kids were in the back of the minivan, strapped into car seats and booster seats. Lori was driving. Grandmother Cynthia Maestri was in the front passenger seat.

Two-year-old Katie and 5-year-old Kyle were rushed to Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo. Katie died just before 2 p.m. Four-year-old Emma died minutes later at Saddleback Memorial Hospital in Laguna Hills, California Highway Patrol officer Katrina Lundgren said.

....

CHP investigators spent hours questioning the driver, Jorge Miguel Romero, 37, of Apple Valley, who said he saw the traffic backed up, applied the brakes but couldn't stop in time.

Fontana-based leasing company Aurora TRL, which owns the truck, did not return calls for comment.

criticize illegal immigration, why must be a racist, even if you don’t know squat about me, what ethnic background i have, how “socially conscious” i am, how much i volunteer for the less fortunate, etc.

Wow, I hit a nerve. Gosh, I'm sorry miss "socially conscious." I didn't realize that some of your best friends were the little people (what was that about the liberal play book now?)

There is nothing wrong with criticizing illegal immigration...I've done it on this thread. Assuming that someone is illegal (or mentioning it before there is any evidence) is, indeed, racist.

Perhaps you can melt your guilt with a socially conscious good deed.

“We’re right next door to Mexico, so it’s logical that the majority of immigrants, illegal or otherwise, would be from Mexico.”

These figures are from 2003!

“INS: 7 million illegal immigrants in United States
Mexicans make up nearly 70 percent of total, figures show

http://www.cnn.com/2003/US/01/31/illegal.immigration/

“We need some way to let them come here, work and go home if they want, or come here, apply for citizenship if they like it here, and stay and be good Americans.”

What are you talking about? The LEGAL way ALREADY exists for ALL immigrants to come here and work and apply for citizenship. And contrary to the rhetoric this Administration and the pro-illegal movement is purporting, our immigration policies are NOT ‘broken’, it’s that our immigration laws are intentionally NOT being enforced and our borders are intentionally NOT being effectively secured. The buck stops in D.C. for the intended consequences!

“One of the problems, just from a practical point of view, is that this has driven this group into the arms of the Dems.....and now have even legals totally on the Dem side. We blew it.”

With President Bush leading the way when he crossed the isle in a CRITICAL election year, risking both houses, to stand stubbornly with the Dems, like Ted Kennedy on this issue. HE blew it. HE blew it for all of us. If we don’t ‘give credit’ where credit is due, we cannot affect a change and be successful in preventing mass amnesty for tens of millions of illegal aliens, we cannot prevent the effective securing of OPEN borders and we will not prevent the destruction of our national sovereignty and security... something better men & women than I have fought and died for.

A few points: Firstly, the Irish were content to either return to Ireland (as you say) or assimilate into American society. Mexicans are, by and large, NOT doing that today.

Secondly, you say that "Mexicans do not want to stay here". Well, the current state-within-a-state called Azatlan would seem to disagree. Not only do they stay here, but they have tons of kids and expect US to learn Spanish because of it. Insane.

Thirdly, you say that being "anti-illegal" makes Mexicans fly into the arms of the Democratic party. Well, good. Thats where criminals and criminal-sympathizers belong. I have absolutely no sympathy for illegals who fradulently vote and legal Mexicans who will vote Dem just because we want to preserve our nation, our language and our heritage.

As to the content of the article, it's not "racism" to suppose that the offending driver is an illegal. A large number of California truck drivers are illegal and the fact that he's "hispanic" means that he is almost certainly Mexican and illegal. Its not racism, its just statistics.

No, it's P-Marlowe BS. If it is a statistical fact, then you should have no trouble proving it.

IMO, the reason Jorge Miguel Romero's name wasn't mentioned until the end of the article is that he was DWI (driving while illegal). Newspapers are known for concealing undesirable information in this way.

One of the problems gathering the type of statistical information you request is that most LE agencies are forbidden from asking about immigration status. That's a fact.

Here's an article that points to the information you request. (California's hit-and-run crisis)

The California DMV estimates that out of 22 million drivers, 1 million are unlicensed. AAA did a study that found that 21 percent (almost 1 in every 4) fatal accidents involved drivers who were not licensed. So, the odds are 1 in 4 that Jorge was an illegal.

No one knows how many unlicensed drivers are on the roads. For its part, the Department of Motor Vehicles estimates that the state has 1 million unlicensed drivers, compared to 22.6 million license-holders.

A study by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, released in February, found that 21 percent of all fatal crashes in California between 1993 and 1999 involved drivers who lacked valid licenses.

The report said many of the state's unlicensed motorists are either undocumented aliens or drivers who cannot afford often-costly car insurance, which is required in California.

State legislation could reduce the number of unlicensed and uninsured drivers. A bill by state Sen. Gilbert Cedillo, D-Los Angeles, would allow undocumented immigrants to obtain California driver's licenses. And since state law requires a license to purchase auto insurance, they could then become insured. The bill, SB60, has passed the Senate and is before the Assembly.

Gil Cedillo wants to give licenses to illegals and has wanted to for quite a while now. But, to think that the person who flaunted US law to get here will suddenly want to become law-abiding by paying for insurance is as ludicrous as the currently logic behind Bush's so-called immigration reform. If we're not enforcing the existing laws now, what makes anyone think we'll enforce the new laws once they're put into place?

Let's look at the number of fake IDs. This is how illegal aliens are able to get trucking jobs, etc. (Immigration loophole leads to spread of fake-ID mills & Fake IDs critical and easy to get)

It is virtually impossible to tell exactly how many of the estimated 10 million undocumented immigrants in the United States use invalid or fraudulently obtained Social Security cards to gain employment, obtain driver's licenses or get loans, but there are indicators that the practice is endemic.

The fact of the matter is, guessing someone's immigration-status because of their surname is a knee-jerk (and unconservative) reaction of the highest order. The probability of this particular driver being an illegal is equivalent to the ratio of illegal drivers to legal drivers. In other words, using the data you supplied the probability of this driver being an illegal is between one in four and one in five. The fact that this report does not mention his immigration status is irrelevant.

Those are not betting odds.

I am with you there. We have driven cross country seven times and those big rig drivers are crazy. They are usually driving around 90mph and tailgate each other and passenger cars without compunction. Tell me that a huge vehicle like that can come to a stop when it is traveling that fast and is so close to the other vehicle. No way. I give them a wide berth.

For more than a year, the Houston Chronicle has closely followed a diverse group of undocumented immigrants in Houston. Virtually all have at some point used phony Social Security cards and numbers. "We do understand that there is a readily available source for these cards," said Wes Davis, a Social Security spokesman in the Dallas regional office. "It's pervasive and a big problem.

If you or I tried to pawn off a fake Social Security Card, or even tried to buy one, we'd be thrown in jail as felons. But there is no equality under the law. Illegal Aliens are exempt from most of the laws Americans and legal residents must obey at the threat of jail or even deportation.

What does that have to do with judging someone’s immigration status on the basis of their surname?

We have to guess because LE agencies are forbidden from asking about someone like Rivero's immigration status at the time of the accident. Personally, I think it's a bad policy because it allows people who are here illegally to get away with murder. (figuratively speaking, of course)

I suppose the new 'conservative' position is to embrace law-breakers, like Bush and the entire GOP seems to be doing these days. The old 'conservative' position used to be that law-breakers were punished, not rewarded.

Those are not betting odds.

Really? What kind of odds do you get in Las Vegas? State Lottery? I'm sure you should be able to provide the statistial information that supports your assertion that 1 in 4 are terrible betting odds, right? Please provide links, as I have done.

It's been estimated that there are between 10 and 20 million Mexican illegal aliens in this country with a total population of ~200 million. That's between 5% and 10%. This ration translates into 1 in every 10 to 20 cars you see on the road being driven by an illegal alien.

And these aren't just drivers of POVs. These are also truckers. (ICE ARRESTS ILLEGAL ALIENS IN 3 STATES WHO HAD HAZMAT LICENSES, COMMERCIAL DRIVER’S LICENSES OR DRIVER’S LICENSES)

Do you know any illegal aliens?

Do you believe there is such a thing as an illegal alien?

Everybody think about that next time you call someone "racist" for opposing the illegals who are swarming our country.
