Republican Debate Part II: All Eyes on Fred Thompson Tonight
National Ledger ^ | May 4, 2007 | JB Williams

Posted on 05/04/2007 12:31:51 PM PDT by Josh Painter

Last night's Republican debate stage was filled with Republican heavy weights, all qualified and all working hard to distinguish themselves in the race for the 2008 presidential nomination. But something was missing. Scripted efforts to work through their sound-bite cue cards has left conservatives still wanting for a true natural leader of a party currently searching for its soul. The big-tent philosophy prevalent in today’s Republican Party has watered down core conservative values over the last few elections, until true conservatives wonder if their party is even worth salvaging any more.

Last night's debate was typical of modern political debates, where the questions were so anticipated in advance that speech writers were able to prepare scripted answers before anyone asked the question. As modern white-noise political debates go, it was a good one! Of course, our expectations are now so low that anyone who can complete a sentence will get a standing ovation…

It was far more substantive than the Democrat version a few days before it and the Republican candidates are clearly more at home on the political hot-seat than either Mrs. Clinton or the kid from Chicago, both of whom struggled just to appear non-offensive to any potential voter.

But after six years of “compassionate conservatism”, conservatives are looking for more and while they listened intently to each response from the stage, they couldn’t help but wonder what Fred would say?

Fred was missing and as a result, the candor that only a Washington outsider can bring to the debate was also missing. McCain was the strongest in attacking the traitorous left in Washington, but stopped short of suggesting what should be done about them. Giuliani shot himself with his double-talk on abortion and Romney made the best over-all showing in this writer’s opinion. None of the others managed a memorable moment at all…which explains why few voters know their names or faces.

As a result, the man not there, Fred… may have been the only one holding conservative imaginations spellbound. Tonight, Fred Thompson will make his national political début in a speech in Orange County, California at the Lincoln Club Dinner. Whether he intends to make any special announcements concerning his expected candidacy or not, all eyes and ears will be on Fred tonight.

At 11:30pm EST, Fred Thompson will deliver a Key Note Speech not originally scheduled as a launching pad for a presidential campaign. But the nation will be watching on the chance that Fred might use the opportunity to answer the call of millions working to draft him into the ’08 campaign.

Though all of the white-noise alphabet networks will be aiming their cameras the other way, C-SPAN is covering the entire speech LIVE. www.fred08.com has an ACTION ALERT out calling on all supporters to engage in the process of drafting a people’s presidential candidate.

Whether Thompson announces tonight or not, people will get a good look at Fred Thompson and from that, they will come away with a better feel for whether or not he is the right man for the times, as so many already believe.

Anyone not already excited about one of the many “inside the beltway” candidates will be watching. I’m sure every “inside the beltway” candidate will be watching.

As the core of the Republican Party searches for its conservative soul, it also searches for a leader capable of leading the party and the nation back to its pro-American roots. The core is becoming impatient for real Washington reform, beginning with someone willing to take on the treasonous left across the aisle for a change…

At 11:30pm EST on C-SPAN, the nation will get a glimpse at the man many believe to be that kind of leader.

Thompson is under enormous pressure to run now. Is he prepared to answer the call?

The minute Fred declares I’ll find out where to send $ and will help in any way I can. We need Fred.

This may be the first campaign I have worked for since Barry Goldwater, when I was a student at N.C.State. I hope he turns out to be another Ragan. If Hill or Hussein win Igotta find another country to live in. I can’t imagine what this country would be like with four years of rule by these bastards.

I saw somewhere else that FDT’s friends think there’s a ninety percent chance he’ll run.

Saw the debate excerpts, I was not that impressed with any of them. On other forums, moonbats are screeching about how bad FDT is, always a good sign you have a strong candidate there.

Don't get me wrong...I'm for Fred. But does CSPAN 11:30 pm EST really mean the nation will be watching? Seems a bit of a reach to me. However, I know I'll be watching (at least DVR'ing).

You are a real piece of work, EternalVigilance. I saw you beating your chest yesterday about what a terrible candidate Romney is, and past comments about Thompson indicate that he does not meet your 100% Purity Level either. Your thinking represents much less than a majority of the voters in this country, and would not win a single state. You are the Republican version of Hubert Humphrey.

It seems clear to me that any candidate who has any chance of victory with the current electorate is not going to pass your holier than thou tests. Not only must the candidate be perfect now, but must demonstrate that he has been perfect for his entire documented life. You are ridiculous in your zealotry.

The fact that you revel in opposition research against these decent men show exactly what kind of person you are— the kind of all-or-nothing mentality that will only marginalize conservatism if you are allowed to dictate our nominee.

You have not said one good thing that I can see about a candidate in the race that is polling above 10%, or the one hopeful candidate that is the subject of this thread. The candidate the you favor (in your postings and on your home page) Alan Keyes is not going to be President—get over it.

Since your only purpose is to tear down the candidates, you are a detriment to our cause.

I was in a quandary. We were faced with two classes of Republican candidates, good conservatives who don't stand a ghost of a chance, and the "tin can RINOs" who get all the MSM publicity.

Fred is my last chance of going to the voting booth and NOT having to hold my nose.

The Dems can't stop him and they have to know that. Before the Gipper, they thought they had a lock on things but now they know otherwise.

Fred: Yes, who's calling?

Caller: Destiny!

You’ll take notice of all the “Fred Thompson, the Bible Thumping, Nazi Rascist” crap popping up all over the place, suddenly, in regard to one of his movie roles?

One of the other boards i visit already has a dozen or more postings on this in the last 2 hours.

I’m sure these idiots think Charlie Sheen should run for re-election, too...

Only if "your cause" is to elect a liberal. Good luck with that.

Do you think Romney's extremely liberal record in Massachusetts is irrelevent?

I think you are irrelevant. You have no candidate, just anti-candidates.
