My problem with Mr. Romney is that his Mormon moral principles did not influence him ENOUGH as governor of Massachusetts. I wish that he were (in some ways) MORE Mormon.
We survived Unitarian presidents, and sham Christian presidents (e.g. the Clintons). We can survive a Mormon president.
By the way, why wasn’t this an issue when LDS-er Mo Udall ran against Carter in ‘76 (coming in 2nd)?
I agree. Romney should be opposed because of his political record, not his Mormonism.
And let me point out, I am a member of the 'religious right'.
I agree with your general sentiments regarding today’s Mormons.
However, please be aware that there is much more to the story of the early Mormons. It is interesting that of the hundreds of bizarre cults running around America at the time, only the Mormons provokes massive popular resistance.
While I’ve never been able to find a compilation of the number of Mormons directly killed by gentile mob action over several decades, it is likely that Mormons killed more gentiles than that in the single incident of Mountain Meadows.
BTW, most religions have highly unpleasant events in their history. What should be important is their behavior today. We should not, however, ignore the facts of history.
This sure seems like liberal hopeful wishing.
Misplaced modifier, unless the nameless man had a wooden leg. (I haven't done a full edit.)
That said, it's a good piece. Well-organized, useful information.
Along with many others, I don't care that Mr. Romney is Mormon. I care about his positions. I'll continue watching him during the campaign.
Early morning bumping
You reference Media Matters... find a new hobby.
Let's concentrate on supporting our candidate. It doesn't matter what opponents think. We have a great candidate so, let's help people see that, not that there are people who don't like him or his/our church. That's the best way to deal with this opposition.
And anyone who would vote for someone just because they are LDS has no principles.
Excellent!
Most people fear the unknown. Ignorance is not always bliss.
If one doesn’t take the time to be educated about the things s/he fears, then s/he will debase and degrade it to everyone s/he knows.
Thanks for the comprehensive article!
That is a damn lie!
I have attended church all my life, the only church who was ever disparaged in any service I have ever attended was the Baptist church.
You are so misinformed its ridiculous.
put me down for #1, it’s just too weird. That said, I am not thinking of joining the LDS church, but choosing a candidate for President. Hillary purports to be a fellow Methodist, and I would not vote for her under ANY circumstances. Romney is far superior to all of the Democrat candidates, and most of the Republicans. I don’t know if he can beat Hillary in the general or not. The “Mormon issue” seems to be more important to the drive-by media than to the grass-roots Republican voters.

I don’t have a problem with Mormons. I have a problem with Romneycare. BTW, I am afraid too many people will vote a certain way to ‘prove’ they are not prejudiced. People will vote for Hillary to prove they accept a woman president. They will vote for Obama to prove they are not racist. And some Republicans may vote in the primary for Romney to prove they are not prejudiced against Mormons. This is not the way to vote. Nobody likes to be accused of being prejudiced. I hated when pundits accused Louisianans of being racist for not voting for Bobby Jindal for Governor. (I actually think Blank-O stole the election.)
Oh, fry me a liver! Jack Kennedy was raised a privileged kid on Cape Cod and in Boston. I've seen the house in Craigville Beach where they lived for a while. It's a three story Victorian Mansion. He was 3 years older than my parents who grew up dirt poor in the Midwest.
It's pretty hard for me to accept anti-Catholic bias existed in Massachusetts given the huge Irish and Italian populations.
Well-written paper but embellished.
You are under the false assumption that Mitt’s only problem is his religion.
You couldn’t be more wrong.
Here are some very good reasons not to vote for Mitt Romney.
He is a phony of the highest order.
94, slams Reagan, 07, loves Reagan.
02, disses NRA, 07, joins NRA.
94-04, pro choice, 07, prolife.
94, even more pro gay rights than Ted Kennedy, 07, now, not so much.
And I just started.
You win no one with articles like this. DO you have a link to something that proves that James Dobson will not vote for Romney?
That being said, if a solid political conservative of the Mormon faith, such as the late Ezra Taft Benson, were to run for President, I would support him in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, Mitt Romney was a liberal when he was governor of Massachusetts who is now spouting conservative rhetoric. Why settle for at best a recent convert when there are solid, lifelong conservatives like Duncan Hunter and Tom Tancredo in the race, plus (maybe) Fred Thompson?
In 2007, some people portray themselves as “victims” of “bigotry” in the evil US. Those people almost always demean our nation by invoking slavery and blabbing about how “Native Americans were forced from their lands”. If the United States is so horrible, why would a billionaire run for President? If elected, he’ll have to live for four years in a cheaper house located in a less pleasant neighborhood.
