OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Legislation described as the nations most sweeping attempt to deny jobs and public benefits to illegal immigrants was sent to Gov. Brad Henrys desk Tuesday.
State lawmakers urged Henry to sign the measure into law after it was approved in a bipartisan 84-14 vote by the state House. The bill was approved 41-6 by the Senate last month.
The people of Oklahoma are very strongly for this bill, said House Speaker Lance Cargill, R-Harrah.
Immigrant groups said the bill is a wrong-headed approach to stop illegal immigration and urged Henry to veto it.
Its not going to control immigration. Its going to create a long-term sour view in the Latino community, said Ed Romo, vice president of the League of United Latin American Citizens.
Its targeting the Latinos, the Hispanics, and nobody else, said Ed Madrid, state director of LULAC. *
Pat Fennell, executive director of the Latino Community Development Agency in Oklahoma City, said the state does not have the authority to supersede federal immigration law.
It opens the door for all kinds of litigation, Fennell said. Were going to be paying the consequences of this silly bill.
Henry, who has previously said he believes illegal immigration is a federal issue, has not decided whether he will sign or veto the measure, a spokesman said.

You never know....
No revolution is starting, just a push-back by us law abiding folks.
84-14 vote by the state House. The bill was approved 41-6 by the Senate last month.
How many votes are needed to override a veto in OK?
Wouldn’t it be political suicide for the Governor to veto this bill in OK??
Gee, I like the objectivity of the opening sentence.
All I can say is “good for them.”
Its not going to control immigration. Its going to create a long-term sour view in the Latino community, said Ed Romo, vice president of the League of United Latin American Citizens.
Its targeting the Latinos, the Hispanics, and nobody else, said Ed Madrid, state director of LULAC. *
I would bet that there is no language regarding any specific region in this bill. This is simply the most egregious offenders squealing.
It is very refreshing to see the people fighting back to protect this country from a bunch of Washington pols who are refuse to enforce federal immigration law to any significant degree.
If Bush gets his way and these lawbreakers get amnesty, this will eventually be trumped by federal law.
It's not illegal to employ a non-citizen; it's illegal to employ an ILLEGAL alien. Unfortunately, that law is seldom enforced.
It is a good thing, but it’s only a start. Before the ink is dry on the law, the ACLU, and the rest of the pro-Hispanic groups will find a leftist judge and get an injunction against the law. The people need to be ready to fork over the bucks to fight for these laws in court, particularly in smaller towns, like Hazleton, who don’t have the bucks to compete against the leftist funded lawyers.
Of course, we can use the courts as well. Some American workers are starting to fight back, filing lawsuits against employers who are systematically using illegals. I know one suit is called Mohawk v. Williams. Mohawk is a carpet manufacturer in Georgia, I think.
I’m sure the state is overrun with Albanians.
Oklahomans get it!
Most of the citizens of Oklahoma get it, but Henry is a died in the wool liberal democrat so I won’t be at all surprised if he vetos it
Are there enough votes to override his veto?

Bttt!
SHOW ‘EM OKIES!!!
