OMAHA, Neb. -- A child injured by gunfire Tuesday night was home talking about the incident on Wednesday.
Omaha police said they were called to the area of 30th and Parker streets after 11 p.m. for a report of shots fired. Aliyah Cain, 5, had been shot inside the home. Police said that she was sleeping at her grandmother's house when a bullet grazed her leg.
The child was treated at the scene and not transported to a hospital.
But she has now entered the statistics for "Kids under 6 who were shot in the US last year."
And rightfully so.
This story is remarkably lacking in details.
Are you suggesting that her inclusion in the statistic is somehow wrong? Or is a “grazing” not really being shot enough?
It is certainly accurate to include her in thr statistics, but I believe many people will see the result and say "How many dead 5-year-olds will it take before this country finally gets rid of guns??"
It's easy to mislead with statistics. That's all I'm saying.
The “minority” councilmember for the City came out against drive by shootings late last year (real brave stand there). His solution was to put speed bumps on the street immediately to the east of this housing project. They also put large “No guns allowed” signs at several locations along the street.
I never understood the rationale to the speed bumps. I thought at the time that it would just mess up the drive-by-shooters aim so that MORE innocent bystanders would be hit. Doubt they will take them out, though. Guess the signs didn’t work either.
