Feds: Millions have eaten chickens fed tainted pet food

People have eaten millions of chickens that were given feed tainted with recalled pet food, federal officials said Tuesday, though they said the threat to human health is minimal.

The announcement came after an investigation of chicken farms in Indiana found that 38 of the facilities had given contaminated feed to poultry raised for human consumption, and that 2.5 million to 3 million people ate them.

The officials added that they expect to discover that chickens on possibly hundreds of farms in other states were also given tainted feed.

That’s one good thing about eating meat. Toxins have already been filtered by kidneys and livers.

And the other good thing is....BARBECUE!

I thought my wife was going a bit overboard, insisting we buy only organic chickens and eggs, but it looks like it might matter.

Where might I find an inorganic chicken? Sounds positively frightening. Could they take over the world?

Kidding aside, can we all agree that all chickens (as well as every other life form on Planet Gore) are organic? Don't let the birkenstockers take that away from us....

Ah yes, the redefinition of the word “organic”, away from its true meaning in chemistry, annoys me too, but sometimes I use its “new” meaning to communicate something. :-)

How about eggs?

We get them for free from neighbors who free range them. Well at least I hope it’s all free range feed :/

Has South Korea or Japan allowed the importation of American beef that was banned when a few head of cattle were found to have Mad Cow Disease?

It’s very funny how other countries have a snap reflex when it comes to protecting their food supplies, and the United States leaves it’s supply open to practically anything in the name of free trade.

[It isn’t just food; Baby bibs made in China are recalled. What next?]

Excerpted:
Wal-Mart recalls vinyl baby bibs containing high levels of lead

Associated Press
Posted May 2, 2007, 7:37 PM EDT

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Wal-Mart Stores Inc. pulled sets of baby bibs Wednesday from its stores nationwide after the bibs tested positive for high levels of lead, a store official said.

The bibs, sold under the Baby Connection brand name, came in packs of two to seven bibs, with embroidered prints or images of Sesame Street characters. Some were sold as long ago as 2004. The bibs were made by Hamco Inc. exclusively for the Bentonville-based retailer.
- -
Masten said officials with the world’s largest retailer have been in contact with Hamco. She referred all questions about the products’ manufacturing to Hamco.

Officials at Hamco, a subsidiary of Crown Crafts Inc. of Gonzales, La., said the company had no comment, and they referred questions to Wal-Mart.
- -
Lead, used as a stabilizer in vinyl plastic, can be “easily substituted” for other products, Engelman said. She said the bibs’ manufacturing tags show they were made in China.

“The lead doesn’t need to be in there and it’s not hard for these companies to take it out,” she said. “In this case, we really feel like getting the products off of the shelf is an important first step and an important step to protect kids.”

DUNCAN HUNTER QUOTE: “Not only do we have a bad trade deal with China but they’re cheating on the one we do have. China is cheating on trade and they’re using our trade dollars to buy ships, planes and missiles. They’re becoming a super power and stepping into the shoes of the Soviet Union.”

also what about farmed fish, what kibble were they fed?

That's one thing I can say about my home state Alabama, they banned the import of Chinese Catfish, not because of melamine, but antibiotics.

Yeah, and Blue Buffalo pet food didn't have I think it was rice concentrate(? correct me if I'm wrong on this) in their recipe either. Didn't stop the company that made it for them from adding it now did it.

More good news for unsupervised traders! If the folks who bought this feed and brought it here could get away with that, imagine what else could be accomplished?

What are our elected officials eating? Don’t they have children and pets, too?

Calm down everybody. This practice is necessary to support the global economy. Americans will just have to learn to compete. We need the trade with China, and if it means that we have to waive all the safety practices that American producers have to abide by but Chinese don’t just to get chickens for $1.90 rather than $1.95, so be it.

And if you want that lettuce a nickle cheaper or your house painted for slave wages, just accept all them illegal aliens.

Nothing must be done to hurt the global economy.

Thankfully, we have a President and Congress that understand that, even if you commoners don’t.
