The really sad thing is that the people on that post would have been nearly as helpless against such an assault as the poor kids at Virginia Tech. They'd have been every bit as disarmed. When I was on active duty, we received a terror threat deemed credible (1983!) and all officers at Div HQ were allowed to CCW concealed for the duration of the threat. I often carried on post then. Not anymore. PC rules. At least these guys had the guts to go after soldiers rather than kids.

I've been expecting this for some time. In fact a couple of years ago, Old Sarge, judicial meanz and myself brainstormed how such actions might progress. This could be something isolated and that I suspect is the case since there is a distinct lack of planning and sophistication in the execution. Had this been a dedicated terror cell skilled in tradecraft and utilizing intell/security/logistics as was the case with the 911 skyjackers, it could have been a similar outcome as 911. I would expect more attacks with greater sophistication and deadlier consequences.

The BIG question: DID THESE GUYS COME ACROSS THE SOUTHERN BORDER TO ENTER OUR COUNTRY? Yes, I'm shouting! If this turns out to be the case, it really is BUSH'S fault! Also, I expect this info (if true) might give a lift to the candidacies of both Ron Paul and Tom Tancredo. As far as Fred goes, I really don't know what his views are.

In the meantime, what's next? Was this an isolated case of Sudden Jihadi Syndrome or was this the first reaction to a "GO CODE" issued by OBL? First cell to get on the "board" with an attempt to score, so to speak?

Thanks ExSoldier. I always respect your insight, based on your extensive experiences. My personal thought is that now as always, they are hidden in plain sight. I think that they are as connected as they need to be; but fractured in order not to lead from one to another. One blurb on my local Fox news affiliate in Philadelphis, stated that one was a cab driver, who was arrested at the Philadelphia airport last night. We'll see if this is confirmed in the news conference this afternoon.

We saw the evidence back after the Bali bombing in ‘02 - small two- or three-man dedicated teams fanned out from the ME, with cash in hand and orders to “go forth and be fruitful and multiply”. The teams were the “seed” for locally-recruited home-grown cells, with instant funding and intimate knowledge of the local area - stuff that an inserted team would have wasted time accumulating.

As the data rolls in, it will be telling us whether or not this was Sudden Jihad, or guys who came over, went to sleep, and got the wake-up call...

One thing I notice: they were targeting bases, not civilian targets. Ft. Dix, USCG stations, Dover AFB - imagine the symbology, what we would have done if one of the returning Angel Flights got hit!?

If this was a team of 6-7 MAM’s, achieving total surprise, with firepower significantly more that the rent-a-cops at the gates, they may have succeeded in at least one goal: displaying their tenacity and their ability to strike in CONUS once again.
