FR EXCLUSIVE: "Mission Accomplished" banner was ordered by the Navy, not by the White House
NAVY WEBSITE ^ | 5-1-07 | DFU

Because today is the fourth anniversary of the commander in chief landing aboard the USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN with the famous "MISSION ACCOMPLISHED" banner, the enemies at home are going to attempt to use it for political purposes. I don't think I need to name the enemies at home. We all know them well. They are the ones who see defeat as politically beneficial to them and will do whatever they can to embolden the enemy and hurt our troops.

To get to the truth of the story, I phoned the media office of the 2nd Fleet in Norfolk, VA. The man who had the answers for me and graciously returned my call was Captain Conrad Chun.

"When something of such high level is planned, such as the landing of the commander in chief on the ship," said Chun, "there are several planning meetings. At one of the meetings was the idea for a banner that said MISSION ACCOMPLISHED." The mission in this case, was the mission of the USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN. The men and women aboard the nuclear-powered carrier accomplished their mission and stayed out for a record time -- 290 days. It was a very long cruise for them.

The banner specifically was designed to celebrate and memorialize the ship's successful deployment. According to Chun, they had no way to make the banner aboard the ship, so the White House was asked to have it made for them.

"There are still those who will doubt the story," said Chun, "but after speaking to those on the ship, I have no doubt that is how it happened."

On a side note, Godspeed to my former son in law Josh who is on the Nimitz now. Go, Navy!

***I don’t doubt that, but my point still stands. This admin has an almost pathological inability to make a clear, convincing, and cogent message across.***

Tell us, hitman, how YOU would get a clear, convining, and cogent message across if the media was predominiantly against you. I see pix and statements from our President every day here on FR, but the vast majority of voters NEVER see most of them. So, just how would you let them know?

“I wonder how many other ships had a similar banner that day.”

None. As none others at that time (none besides that air craft carrier group) were making their permanent re-assignment to their home port after the completion of their Iraq invasion mission tasks.

It was THEIR particular “mission accomplished” and they wanted to celebrate it with their Commander in Chief.

***And if I had shown you a glimpse of the future and convinced you that this was true, then we’d probably have had 80%+ of the people here on FR calling for the president’s impeachment.***

Thanks for speaking for the America haters. /s

First of all, get better spokespeople.

Second, they shouldn’t be so secretive especially when they don’t have to be.

Do better work with focus groups, etc, to see what resonates better with the electorate.

And other stuff, of course.

I wanted to verify it for myself and bring his words directly to FreeRepublic

And then Mark Levin sent it out to an audience of many, many more. Thanks and congratulations.

“If you read the President’s speech from that day, you will find that he talked a great deal about how much work was still left to do in Iraq”

Ahh but they wouldn’t let a little thing like the facts get in the way of their agenda.

DUH I figured that one out on Day one. What took them so long. It was obvious the mission was accomplished for the carrier when it returned to its home port.

Isn’t hind sight great, now it would have been nice if the presidents staff had alerted him so he could have revised his speech slightly to reflect that was a ship statement. That alone could have changed a lot of attitudes

The best way would be to listen to the President and ignore the media.

"Took them just four years to get the story straight.

I tell you, love him or not, this admin is just abominable when it comes to communication, and it has really hurt them (and us).

I hear Dan Bartlett, Dirctor of the Communications Office at the White House is leaving. The man has done the President more harm by accident than Michael Moore did on purpose.

"In fairness, Chun made a comment about this after it happened. I wanted to verify it for myself and bring his words directly to FreeRepublic."

Actually, I do remember the Captain stating this shortly after the event. Also, it's my understanding that "Mission Accomplished" banners are not a new invention in the Navy (I'm an Army slug, I wouldn't know).

I tell you, love him or not, this admin is just abominable when it comes to communication, and it has really hurt them (and us).

I've been thinking about it for quite a while, and I've come to the conclusion that Bush Derangement Syndrome is a disease closely related to Clinton Derangement Syndrome.

However, the chief difference in the maladies is the way in which the American media approached each one.

With the Clinton Derangement Syndrome, the MSM was constantly spraying water on the innumerable Clinton brush fires springing up everywhere, or studiously ignoring the smoke from new Clinton fires (Nothing To See Here!).

With the Bush Derangement Syndrome, the MSM is spraying gasoline on anything that looks like a spark, or they're out in the underbrush lighting fires while no one is looking (or so they think). This is why the Left is so convinced that Bush is an incompetent liar who needs to be impeached - because the MSM wholeheartedly embraces that position.

It took the Right gathering together on a Free Republic to suddenly understand that it wasn't just each individual who was nuts - the Criminals Clinton actually were just that.
