PROBLEM: Poisonous or Deleterious Substance Unfit For Food Unsafe Food Additive
COUNTRY: China (CN)
REASON FOR ALERT: In recent weeks, there has been an outbreak of cat and dog deaths and illness associated with pet food manufactured with vegetable proteins contaminated with melamine and melamine related compounds. In response to this outbreak, FDA has been conducting an aggressive and intensive investigation. Pet food manufacturers and others have recalled dog and cat food and other suspect products and ingredients. This has been one of the largest pet food recalls in history, a recall that continues to expand.
Thus far, 18 firms have recalled product, 17 Class I and 1 class II, covering over 5,300 product lines. As of April 26, 2007, FDA had received over 17,000 consumer complaints relating to this outbreak, and those complaints included reports of approximately 1950 deaths of cats and 2200 deaths of dogs. The Agency is working with federal, state, and local governments, academia, and industry to assess the extent of the outbreak, better understand how melamine and melamine related compounds contributed to the pet deaths and illnesses, and to determine the underlying cause of the contamination.

Like I said, parse it any way you like. I’m standing by my statement of two products based on the letter I referenced. If you don’t agree, fine.

Block all food from China until this thing is figured out and inspections are started...........in total.
We should end ALL business dealings with China over this. ALL of them!
And straight to Hell with the free traitors who gleefully sell their souls for a few pennies of profit.

More than we'll ever find out, I guarantee.
I suspect the cover-up is in high gear and incriminating links are being destroyed with all haste.

Told the Mrs. that we should avoid all Red Chinese food as long as a dozen years ago. Anything which says Bentonville ARK is code for Red China

As long as they stopped there, I could go along with that.
Unfortunately, they don’t and the rest of us are left to pay the bill after they skip out to their next dirty little enterprise.

We should end ALL business dealings with China over this. ALL of them! I think we should end all normal trade relations with Red China. Clearly it's now also a matter of our food safety, but beyond that, it has been just foolish of us to build up a totalitarian state into a wealthy and powerful one.
Let them stew in their own poisoned system: we don't need any food, no matter how inexpensive, from Red China.

Agreed. The cheaper the cost in cash, the higher the price in blood.
And we're not even begun to get the bill.

Interestingly under the category at the web-site you provided there is no flour available. I do not use mixes. Thanks for the information.

This is going to cause massive problems. Most end users (the guys who actually make the final products that hit the shelves) have no idea where their suppliers get their stuff from. Back tracking will be impossible in some places. Expect the FDA to be pleading for more funds soon. I just don't see this being an FDA issue--it is an issue regarding the name-brands that don't give one damn about the ingredients of the product they are selling to us, EXCEPT that it be cheap and their profits BIG. They should pay the price for not monitoring their own product through huge lawsuits or run out of business. FDA will never have enough people to monitor the food. That is just ridiculous.

I don’t want a gluten free flour. I want a bread flour that has not been enhanced with melamine to make it worth more. It takes gluten to make the bread raise. But I would be curious as to what you find out.

Hard to know what is- processed foods often mislead or say USA, when it’s a lie.

If we can toss the thousands of Chinese illegals too, I’d be happier. China can bring nothing but bad things to this debtor nation.

Yep; first election I was “aware” of was Stevenson vs Eisenhower, 1952.
At that time, my oldest brother was fighting in Korea, and #2 brother was in England, with the Air Force. I was in grammar school.

And there’s the rub. No packaging tells you where the ingredients come from. It’s akin to playing Russian roulette.

Could be, but IMO, there MAY be also a more “lenient” definition of the word recently.
