PROBLEM: Poisonous or Deleterious Substance Unfit For Food Unsafe Food Additive
COUNTRY: China (CN)
REASON FOR ALERT: In recent weeks, there has been an outbreak of cat and dog deaths and illness associated with pet food manufactured with vegetable proteins contaminated with melamine and melamine related compounds. In response to this outbreak, FDA has been conducting an aggressive and intensive investigation. Pet food manufacturers and others have recalled dog and cat food and other suspect products and ingredients. This has been one of the largest pet food recalls in history, a recall that continues to expand.
Thus far, 18 firms have recalled product, 17 Class I and 1 class II, covering over 5,300 product lines. As of April 26, 2007, FDA had received over 17,000 consumer complaints relating to this outbreak, and those complaints included reports of approximately 1950 deaths of cats and 2200 deaths of dogs. The Agency is working with federal, state, and local governments, academia, and industry to assess the extent of the outbreak, better understand how melamine and melamine related compounds contributed to the pet deaths and illnesses, and to determine the underlying cause of the contamination.

cyanuric acid, amilorine, and amiloride — all byproducts of melamine.
Looks like the cyanuric acid comes from the melamine itself, when it reacts either in the food manufacutring process, or else in the body.
I'm not taking the topic personal; I'm taking you personal. You come across as having a vendetta against Science Diet. You come across mouthy and in-your-face. You insinuated that I had to overcome some personal standards test of yours. Well, I don't!
It did have problems with the initial recalls however.
And??? Well, yes, two products at the very beginning. How many more products did competitors have recalled involuntarily? And some continue to do so? Yet you constantly take jibes at Science Diet. Well, I'm tired of it. I hope you find some other product because it just might give you back some semblance of rational behavior. Lord knows you need it.
And hopefully, whoever is doing the pinging will see this and take my name off. I'm tired of the unwarranted swipes and the inaccuracies. You are so wrong on so many levels it astounds me.
Goodbye.
Good question about the wheat ingredients. I would think that it could be a concern, but I just don’t know.

keeper
Apparently this melamine tainted wheat gluten has found its was into the animal feed market.
The tainted gluten should be destroyed.
and BTW, I'm not convinced melamine is the culprit. It was listed as a relatively innocuous compound.
Please don’t leave the thread, we need everyone’s expertise to understand all this!
Two is how I read their announcement. The items you listed are all variations of 'Science Diet Savory Cuts Feline (can)'. The other product was 'Prescription Diet m/d Feline (dry)'. It's how Science Diet defines 'product':
"Listed below is a summary of key announcements we have made.
1. All Science Diet Savory Cuts Feline can product has been recalled or withdrawn from the market place.
2. All Prescription Diet m/d Feline dry product has been recalled from the marketplace.
These products represent less than one percent of our total business."
I hope this clarifies everything.
Lord knows I need to find an alternative to what I have bought in the past.....
Have you looked at www.omhpet.com?
We've been feeding Wellness Super5Mix to our dog for over two years. We've recently added Innova Evo to the OMH Super5Mix.
Maybe this is just a test-run for the real thing.
This is going to cause massive problems. Most end users (the guys who actually make the final products that hit the shelves) have no idea where their suppliers get their stuff from. Back tracking will be impossible in some places.
Expect the FDA to be pleading for more funds soon.
I can understand, but I'm tired of cheap shots by someone who seems to be working an agenda. I tried very hard to be open and calm in the thread last week, but he just remained rude until the very end where he brushed me off. And now he's at it again. Well, I'm not going to stand for it further; especially when we have one of the finest and most respected products on the market.
Actually, nitrogen being inert, won't work. Carbon monoxide bonds strongly with hemoglobin, rendering it a bright healthy looking red.
Many years back I had an undetected exhaust leak in my car. I was cranky, achy, and worn out, but I looked great!
I looked like I was in 'the pink of health'...
maybe the best bakeries would never knowingly deign to use the cheap glutens from China though.
*lol* If I didn't already have a great tagline, I'd use THAT.
There used to be, may still be, a BIG problem with labeling, in that some external packaging (like for six-pack boxes of caned goods) was labeled "Made in USA", but only refered to the package; you had to look at the product itself to find where it was made.
One must also pay attention to the difference between "printed in USA" and "made in USA", lest a quick glimpse of the "USA" part fool you into buying.
Awwww, and he came so close to actually apolgizing...
Hope you have more luck than I did.
A few yrs. ago I got the bright idea to bake my own bread. Started with whole wheat.
The result was used for a doorstop, on a spring loaded door. :^)
We got that crap once. Big mistake. Tasted like goldfish (well, like a goldfish bowl smells). I don't trust freshwater fish-farm fish anyway, and absolutely not from China. Good move.
So since Science Diet defines canned chicken, canned fish and canned beef as the same product, by your reasoning ALL Science Diet canned products are covered? You might want to check back with your boss before you continue this line of spin.
Eukanuba’s website ..
* Eukanuba dog and cat dry foods and biscuits were not affected by the Menu Foods recall.
* Eukanuba dog and cat dry foods DO NOT include wheat gluten, corn gluten or rice protein concentrate..
* All Eukanuba dog and cat dry foods are manufactured in our own facilities in Nebraska, Ohio and North Carolina.
Note, they don’t claim all-American ingredients, only no gluten products. Whatever that means.
