There are many reasons that we buy from strange sources.
take milk for instance (to show a non wheat item). The USA pays milk price support to farmers. Farmers are, in turn, forbidden to use milk for anything but food products so any surplus milk gets tossed when it would be suitable for industrial items such as casein used to emulsify paint, cosmetics and other things. 100% of casein must be imported becsuse it is legally forbidden to manufacture it in the USA. Casein, for those who don’t know, is milk protein and the natural byproduct of spoiled milk.
Why do we shoot ourselves in the foot like this?
God only knows.

I never watch nightline, but caught a few minutes Friday night. Turns out raw milk is now illegal in 23 states for all but animals.... so people who bottle it in those states have to label not for human consumption and people who buy it have to say they are buying it for their pets. One guy drives 3 hours a week to buy his milk.

I grew up on a dairy ranch and on raw milk.. never got sick from it and I don't recall one single customer of my grandmother's ever reporting a problem.

IMHO this carries big brother just too far... they should be worries about what China is sending up for feed and food more than what our small dairy farmers are selling.

It boils down to that our politicians are for sale. It is that simple. Lets not even talk about sugar, and those damned beet farmers/corn syrup manufacturers.
