There’s only one country that can compete with France in the area of lunching and cuisine in general and that’s Italy.

But I have come to realise just how Mediterranean France really is, far more like Catholic Spain or laid-back Italy than its work-obsessed northern neighbours, where time is money and time is to be raced against rather than savoured slowly.

"I speak the tongue of a race the acme of whose mentality is the maxim: time is money." James Joyce, Ulysses

If leisure is the most important thing in your life, please don’t complain when other societies are more productive than you are, and therefore have more money.

The heck with French lunch - give me a German breakfast, anyday.

“work-obsessed northern neighbours”

- The people of Northern France aren’t lazy, but calling them ‘work-obsessed’ is an encroachment on sheer reality.

On offer was a three course meal for just 12 euros

$16.00 lunches? A McDonald's franchise would clean up.

There are several countries richer than France, but few ones more productive.

Check out the list below of countries by ‘GDP per capita per hour’.

Please note this compilation uses the ‘PPP/Purchasing Power Parity converted GDP’ measurement favored in the US.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_%28PPP%29_per_capita_per_hour

So why is France poorer than the US?

Because they work less.

“$16.00 lunches? A McDonald’s franchise would clean up.”

- What’s wrong with affording to pay for real food?

A perfectly legitimate lifestyle choice.

But I get tired of their glorification of it as some sort of moral superiority.

Laziness is no more a virtue than is workaholism.

I think the writer’s point is not that the French are better, but that they do have things in their culture well worth saving.

No argument.

But a great many of the French do seem to think they are better, and have few qualms about expressing that opnion.

Yes, and even that’s OK — as long as it does not make them anti-American across the board, as many in France (and most of the rest of Europe) are. The problem isn’t mainly their pride, but the power of the leftist ideology in France.

I believe it was a reference to the residents of countries north of France, not the northernites of France.

“german breakfast, lunch or dinner, right? :)”

I recently visited Belgium for the first time of my life.

One of the best culinary traditions of this country is the tradition of combining French quality with German sized portions.
