I suspect that what he bought was a MAGAZINE, not a “clip”. AKs do not use clips. If you do not know the difference, look it up.
Who cares if they allow it or not...good people need to have their weapons to deter mass shootings. No one’s going to prosecute a person who just saved of the lives of many possible victims.

Full or Semi they are still AK's, and they are very common in the US.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Four people have been shot and three are confirmed dead in a shooting at Ward Parkway Mall in Kansas City.
KCTV5 has received reports that the gunman is among those dead.

“We have at least two fatalities, maybe more,” said Joe Vitale, a Kansas City fire department battalion chief.
The only person we saw was a black gentleman holding his eye. The man had apparently been shot,” Washington said.
Preliminary witness accounts gave conflicting accounts of exactly where the shootings occurred. Television video showed a window shot out at a Starbucks coffee shop but some witnesses said the shooting occurred around a Target store.
I still remember CNN's John Zarella talking about a semi-auto rifle while showing a clip of a FLa Sheriff blasting from a full-auto AK-47. Sure, 30 rounds will bust a concrete block, but that was supposed to frighten stupid America.

The shootings reportedly occurred at approximately 3:00 p.m. Central Time. Police had been responding to a call at the 3700 block of East 93rd Street on the Missouri side of Kansas City, where officers found one dead person.
When a Kansas City officer saw a car matching a description of the one near where the victim had been found, the person in the car shot at the officer and hit him in the arm.
The report says the gunman entered the mall at that time and began shooting, causing a chaotic scene to erupt in the shopping center.
A witness at the scene says emergency crews have been rushing to the aid of the injured, with “dozens of fire crews, EMTs, medics and ambulances rushing from every direction up and down Ward Parkway and State Line and 75th.”

They may or may not, depending on the second by second reconstruction of the incident. Here in Kansas City store clerks, security guards, and people in their homes who use guns to repel a robbery or attack are routinely arrested and held in custody until the prosecutor decides to prosecute or not. The only participants in a shooting that don't get arrested at the scene are on-duty or off-duty police officers. If the perp ends up with too many bullet holes or bullet holes in the wrong places the shooter almost always gets prosecuted for some kind of felony or criminal homicide.
Big city police departments that face a daily grind of shooting calls and murders develop a very cynical attitude about armed citizens, and the SOP is to remove as many guns and shooters from the population as humanly possible.
