There are very few AK-47’s in the US. An AK-47 is a selective fire full-anto and semi-auto weapon.

So what is the semi-auto US civilian model called if it's not an AK-47 or AK-74?

Full or Semi they are still AK's, and they are very common in the US.

It's all just semantics, but we should refrain from calling US legal semi-autos "AK-47s" because the idiot antigunners use that to promote the idea that machine guns are all over "the streets".

I still remember CNN's John Zarella talking about a semi-auto rifle while showing a clip of a FLa Sheriff blasting from a full-auto AK-47. Sure, 30 rounds will bust a concrete block, but that was supposed to frighten stupid America.

I’m a gun smith. The vast majority of the weapons of this type you see in the states are not AK’s but a different model. They share an action that looks the same but internally is different from the fully automatics. The stocks are also different model to model. There are a dozen different countries who make them and there is a great variance in both quality and aesthetics. Every car is not a Chevy and every truck is not a Kenworth. Every rifle based on the Kalashnikov action is not an AK.
