Your comment that the Rockwell vision of American “never was” is just not true. We all, those of us of a certain age, remember little local stores that we loved. We had a neighborhood grocery where they wrote down in a notebook what we spent and we paid them once a month.<<

What you are talking about was “The cutting edge of Capitalism” DURING THAT ERA....The notebook was the credit card of today...etc. ( if u think back...most of the owners of those “Mom and Pop business’s that succeeded, were considered wealthy...many of them in there later yrs becoming bank directors etc....at least in my little town anyway)

We have a large chain- Meijer - in this area- they provide FREE antibiodics, not just 4$ scrips.

Meijer was started in my part of the world, Grand Rapids. They are exactly like Walmart. Their pricing and practices are almost identical to Walmart....low prices.

Yet you never hear a word about how they treat their employees. You never hear a word about how they destroy downtowns. You never hear a massive coordinated attack against them.

And the reason? It's because Meijer is unionized. The whole propaganda war against Walmart is generated by union thugs and their political lackeys. They don't care one bit about Walmart affecting small towns. They don't care one bit about the "plight" of workers. What they care about, what they get dollar signs in their eyes about, is the all of the forced union dues they'll collect from these same workers when and if they can finally convince enough idiots that working at Walmart is like working in a third world sweat shop.

Yup. Ole Tricare since there is no military hospital nearby, we use a local group of MDs. They are very nice folks. Open 7:30-6:00 p.m. Monday-Friday; 8-1 p.m. on Saturday, and 1-4 p.m. on Sundays!!!! There are five doctors in the group. You are assigned to one, but could see any of the five as they rotate through out the day(s). But, really nice folks. Since I was so used to seeing any number of doctors in the military, this system with these doctors does not bother me. They all have access to my records for review.

Just at Menards today, same thing, different store. The claim of ‘unfair’ trade practices or whatever it is they say,
is done by everyone else, Walmart is just the big one
many want to take down.

I did not watch the so called Debate but did hear about the Wal-Mart question.
So most of the Democrats think that Wal-Mart is bad for the country. Makes me wonder if the next step for the lefties is deciding if companies like Wal-Mart, etc. that are “Bad” for the country will be now either be shut down by the Government or Nationalized for the Public good.
Kind of scary when you think about it but would anyone put this past the Lefties???????????

I’m also old enough to remember “the good old days”. Yes, we did have locally owned grocery stores. But we didn’t have fresh produce for much of the year - I remember late winter when we just hoped that we could find onions and potatoes that weren’t terribly sprouted. We wouldn’t have thought of having fresh fruit.
The drugstore always had enough syrup and flavorings to make us good fountain drinks (I miss those), but the hardware store, the dress store, and the gas station never had everything we needed.
I really prefer these days when we can get anything we want when we want. And at cheap prices.

Let’s not forget that it draws people in to fill their perscriptions and at least 7 out of ten end up buying at least $20 of other items while they are waiting for their prescription to be filled.

I pay $3 per on each of mine at Wal Mart for generic. I pay $9 for the "real or name" drug.

I was "Promised Lifetime Medical Care" during my 22 years active duty. So, why are we paying the $3 and $9 ????

Not a 90 day supply if purchased at Walmart. 30 days...

I like it the way it is as well. Now admittedly I am too young to have been around for the NR America, however I do remember Woolworth's and their little diner that served fountain drinks, burgers, hot dogs, and my favorite grilled cheese. I wish Wal-Mart’s would dump McD’s and open up a little greasy spoon like the old department stores used to have. I admit it’s for nostalgia but I think they would probably do a clean up!

There are other businesses that are picking up the slack. My current favorite is called Chee’burger, and they serve cheeseburgers (of course), grilled cheese, fountain drinks (shakes, egg creams, & root beer floats among them), and other greasy stuff.
The chain is expanding, and maybe if they open one next to every Wal-Mart, we’d be really in clover. :-)

I wasn’t knocking Wal Mart. Just was afflicted with nostalgia for the past. There were awful things back then, I grew up in the deep south, but the bedrock was an absolute security with the greatest fear being that of disappointing one’s people. Doors were not locked {unless someone had something to hide}, cars were left out with no locks, laundary was clean and on the line drying, sheets smelled good and were cotton, fans droned, we read books all summer, the man at the grocery called us by our names, when we needed gas and had no money on us, the man at the station said “I’ll get it from your Dad later”.

You just can’t equate convenience with that, or money, or anything. It was secure. Maybe today there is the same security and it is just attached to different things.

WalMart makes me anxious, just going in gives me the hebbie jeebies. But I go in, their veggies are great.

Lifetime care doesn’t mean free care. Are you really upset to pay those copays?

Damned if I know Brother. Seems I got that pledge also. Along with dental care, which of course went first. Then there was the PX, Commissary, etc. No post within 140 miles of me. They closed Fort McClellan here in Alabama, so I cannot use that any longer. Nope they make us pay that fee each year, the co-pays, and now want to triple the fee each year, so that comes next. Of course, those were PROMISES made by recruiters who had no right to pledge those to us. AND, of course, the military and Congress critters KNEW the recruiters were making those “promises” yet did NOTING to stop them. They ALLOWED the recruiters to continue to MISLEAD us for all those years. Then, when they wanted to screw us royal, it was easy to say recruiters had not right to make those promises. But, you are right, we were promised all that for our service. They used up the best years of my life, beat my body to a pulp, cut my retired pay by the amount of disability they give me for the injuries, so you actually wind up paying your own disability out of your retired check. They continue to cut, cut, cut, cut, and what can we do about it, NOTHING. What am I going to do now, get out of the Army? Way too late, years too late. If I had known all those years ago, that we were going to be screwed into the ground now, and all they told me I had for my service would end up like this, maybe I would have made different life decisions. Who the hell knows? The Congress, administration, Pentagon whores, none of them really care about the retired troops at all. Just one soldier’s opinion of Congress.
