A fast-tracked congressional plan to add special protections for homosexuals to federal law would turn "thoughts, feelings, and beliefs" into criminal offenses and put Christians in the bull's-eye, according to opponents.
"H.R. 1592 is a discriminatory measure that criminalizes thoughts, feelings, and beliefs [and] has the potential of interfering with religious liberty and freedom of speech," according to a white paper submitted by Glen Lavy, of the Alliance Defense Fund.
As James Jacobs and Kimberly Potter observed in Hate Crimes, Criminal Law, and Identity Politics, 'It would appear that the only additional purpose [for enhancing punishment of bias crimes] is to provide extra punishment based on the offender's politically incorrect opinions and viewpoints,'" said Lavy.
The proposal has been endorsed by majority Democrats on the committee, and already has 137 sponsors in the full House, making it possible it could be voted on in a matter of days or weeks.
"This is a terrible thing, to criminalize thought or emotion or even speech," Lavy told WND, referring to H.R. 1592, now pending at the committee level in the U.S. House. Democrats there have been turning back amendments that would strip it of its worst provisions, according to an observer.
Bishop Harry Jackson, chairman of the High Impact Leadership Coalition, said the plan, the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Protection Act of 2007, is no more than "a surreptitious attempt by some in Congress to strip the nation of religious freedom and the ability to preach the gospel from our church pulpits."
"It will stamp all over our doctrine and practice of our faith," he said. "We believe what the Bible says. If you start there we've got a major problem."

Again, this law, which I oppose, doesn't support some groups over others. For example, any religious based crime would fall under it's umbrella, it's not limited to minority religions. Same with race and sexual orientation, though I acknowlege there aren't many assaults on hetereosexuals based on their orientation. If there were, they'd be actionable.
See 161, I don’t like the bill, but it’s not about controlling thoughts, beyond being a political statement, it’s essentially a wrongheaded way of addressing sentencing. And motivation is a legitimate factor in sentencing. As to whether the random drunk commiting an assault is less of a risk on release than a racist commiting a racist attack, we’ll have to disagree on that. That’s a sentencing function, which is why most crimes, even violent crimes, allow for a wide range of sentences in most states.

DNC Dean Says Giuliani’s ‘Personal Life Is A Serious Problem’
Fri Apr 27 2007 09:37:49 ET
Democratic party chairman Howard Dean said on Thursday that Rudy Giuliani “personal life is a serious problem.”
Dean sent the warning on CNN’s SITUATION ROOM with host Wolf Blitzer.
Chariman Dean said the former New York City Mayor “has a lot of character issues that he has to answer for. And overwhelmingly, Americans are going to vote on honesty and integrity.... We’ve begun to reach out to evangelical Christians, and that’s a real problem for him. His personal life is a serious problem for him.”
BLITZER: Well, describe those character issues...
DEAN: No, I’m not going to get into that stuff. I don’t like attacking people on their personal lives, but I can assure you that in the Republican primary, given what went on in the 2000 Republican primary in South Carolina between George Bush and John McCain, those attacks will be made in the Republican Party.
Developing...
“Howard Dean thanks you!”
Thanks me for what?
Perhaps I should support reading comprehension laws, “chief”.
And BTW... what party am I in?
Well, I don't know better. I suppose I'm stupid. Lots of things are promised before laws are passed to make them more palatable. However, no one knows how courts will rule or even how prosecutors will choose to enforce a given law. The original Civil Rights Act came with an absolute promise that it would not be used to discriminate against whites or to give blacks preferences over whites. I am old enough to remember this. Look what happened.
Go back and try again with my original post. You may (or may not) finally discern that it is a stark warning against such laws and our own government. So what party does that position put me in sage one? (no, chief, it doesn't have anything to do with spices).
Oops, I went back and read your original post (that I only skimmed thru the first time) and now see that I’ve misinterpreted you. My apologies, you are correct, I should be more careful in my reading. Sorry about that.
