SALEM, Ore. - If Gov. Ted Kulongoski seems a little sluggish this week, he's got an excuse: he couldn't afford coffee. ADVERTISEMENT
In fact, the Democratic governor couldn't afford much of anything during a trip to a Salem-area grocery store on Tuesday, where he had exactly $21 to buy a week's worth of food the same amount that the state's average food stamp recipient spends weekly on groceries.
Kulongoski is taking the weeklong challenge to raise awareness about the difficulty of feeding a family on a food stamp budget.

Does he not realize that food stamps are 'assistance' and NOT a salary?
Yes, Progresso soup IS expensive, that's why we don't buy it except for when it is on sale! Its actually cheaper if they prepare their meals from scratch. Since they are NOT working they have plenty of time to COOK!
Sorry for the rant, this just irks me!

Why not just make groceries free? Problem solved.

Hasn’t Oregon pretty much been run by Libs for decades?

It is assistance because cell phones and cigarettes cost money.

You mean they haven't indexed food stamps for inflation yet? Tsk, tsk, tsk.

Its supposed to be a ‘help’ until they get back on their feet or find a job. “slaps head” What was I thinking. Why work when you can get things for FREE off the sweat and hard work of others!
Why do these people feel like they are entitled to a portion of the working person’s paycheck?

Maybe if they could still cut trees in Oregon, Gov. Ted could eat better. Things can`t be to bad, check out the pay and benefits of Oregon`s public employees and the prices of Portland area housing!

No one asks why government pays them less for food than they can make on a job.

He gets $21? Heck, I see recipients getting a whole cart full of meats, drinks, junk food and desserts and swiping their ‘debit’ card. Apparently Louisiana give better ‘benefits’.

In a lib utopia, I had no idea welfare recipients were starving. I thought they had it licked in Oregon by now.

Hasnt Oregon pretty much been run by Libs for decades? The thing that concerns me the most about this is that ALL of the other states are watching. I'm not sure how food stamos work. Do states make the guidelines or is it federal. Meaning, would a 'raise' be across the whole nation?

$21/a week for food stamps? Is it just him? We had to have assistance a few times. Yes, hated it. Especially knowing that not long before your family made more than these caseworkers who now looked at you like you were something yucky on the bottom of their shoe. Or the caseworker who sneered, "Is your husband white?" (because I am half Mexican)
Even when we only had three people in the house we still got way more food stamps than we needed.
