NEW YORK — Skybus Airlines Inc., a new U.S. budget carrier, on Tuesday said it will start flying on May 22 with $10 one-way tickets available on all flights.

"Beginning today, passengers can buy airline tickets for less than the cost of a tank of gas," Skybus CEO Bill Diffenderffer said in a statement.

The launch of the new low-cost carrier, which is based in Columbus, Ohio, could pressure established carriers like AMR Corp's (AMR) American Airlines and Delta Air Lines Inc..

Skybus, which plans to acquire more than 70 aircraft over the next five years, hopes to be able to undercut rivals by selling advertising space inside and outside its planes and charging for priority seating and checking bags.

It keeps costs down by only taking reservations over the Internet and not staffing a call center.

You can...but you have to connect to Columbus of course. You would have to get a ticket from KC to Columbus and then get a ticket from Columbus to somewhere else.

I thought about doing that, driving to KC and using the airline that way......but too much of a hassle to have to book two round trip flights I think.

Damn! $10?? How much are they paying their pilots?

Pilots fly for free, and get a nice window seat up front?

Spirit Air would be great....

IF THEY FLEW IN *FLYOVER COUNTRY*

They don’t.....they say to the rest of the country outside the east and west coasts: “screw you.”

They don’t even fly in DALLAS, for crying out loud. That is just ridiculous.

Flight Attendants make $9/hr and sell crap on the plane for a 10% commission.

Sounds like a great after school job!

Aw, c'mon, it's only 4 one way flights and ALL online.
Think of the carbon offsets you won't have to buy.

Now this is a new approach to business ..... those planes will probably wind up looking like this. Probably should be closer to 20 bucks.

Can you imagine a plane with that many logos?

Excellent, part of my new ode to Sheryl Crow, aka "I've got an Issue with the Tissue":

and you know
I just don't go
Number 2
Anymore

And my farts, they smell like roses
- Really, I don't release my greenhouse gases anymore -
- That's why I'm a little more puffy nowadays -
- But I tell ya, somedays it's pretty hard keeping that cork up there..

More to come.

That’s basically it. Skybus is using the Ryanair business model - sell some tickets dirt cheap, others for a little more, and a few for full price. All tickets are fully non-refundable, so when you show up late - you lose your money and have to pay full fare. When you show up early - you can’t get on the earlier flight without paying full fare.

Nickle and dime customers by charging for everything else - advance seat assignments, food, drinks, bottled water, checked baggage - everything short of using the bathroom. Put advertising on the planes, on the tray tables - everywhere. Fly to cheaper airports, sometimes far from the “city” that you supposedly serve.

Spirit Airlines is already going down that avenue. This model works in Europe, but there is far less competition there than here in most places.

Sheryl Crow, first public advocate for Butt-Corking.

Going beyound insane with the Seinfeld-esque 1 square of TP per bathroom visit.

This was PR genius. It will get tons of free coverage without any ad costs to launch the new airline.

Buying advertising is mostly a dicey business these days. But the MSM will line up to cover this “story” for free.

Instead of inflight movies you get infomercials!

“You inflight entertainment includes ‘Jack Le Lanes’ Power Juicer’ and ‘The Ablounger.’ You won’t need headsets because we are leaving the sound turned up throughout the features!”

Maybe it’s like some of the tour companies that contracted with the US Military bases in Germany. You would get your family settled in their seats and the guide would suddenly mention they needed fuel and take up a collection. Sometimes there would be something wrong with the bus. We need a part or brake fluid.

Believe it or not; a lot of people would put up with it. Especially if they had small children.

There were some good companies but the few bad ones gave them all a bad name.
