Thompson To Offer Daily Commentary On ABCRadio.com
RadioInk ^ | 4/25/07

Posted on 04/25/2007 8:30:48 AM PDT by areafiftyone

Former senator, commentator and actor Fred Thompson will provide regular opinion and analysis on ABCRadio.com. The network says the “Fred Thompson Report” will discuss issues and events that affect all Americans. Audio versions of many of the commentaries will also be made available on ABCRadio.com.

“The Internet allows – as never before – a real dialogue among the American people. There has never been a more important time in recent history to be informed as a nation, and my hope is that my daily commentary will contribute to that discussion,” said Thompson. “I’m looking forward to using the medium to its fullest.”

“There is a clear demand to hear from Senator Thompson. It’s obvious that listeners, if not America, seek his leadership on issues that matter. Radio has already provided an excellent platform to inform and educate listeners seeking his opinion—the ‘Fred Thompson Report’ is another extension to deliver his respected opinion,” said John McConnell, SVP/Programming, ABC Radio Networks.

Thompson, a former Republican Senator from Tennessee is well known for his current television role on NBC’s “Law & Order.” For the past year, Thompson has been working with ABC News Radio as a Special Program Host and Senior Analyst, hosting special reports and doing vacation fill-in for Paul Harvey.

Perhaps taking this ABC Radio gig would actually be a step TOWARD running: Lots of exposure over the airwaves through the summer, building up name recognition and support . . . transition from perception as "actor" back to political thinker and speaker . . . . then announce . . . when? Labor Day-ish?

Otherwise, I can't understand how taking this radio gig NOW fits into running for President.

This could be just backup in case he decides not to run. If he does run he probably can easily get out of this contract. Its probably better than a TV one and much easier to get out of.

Hmmm . . . story posted by one of the leading Rudyphiles around here. I bet you guys are hoping this means FDT won’t run, since he would be Rudy’s worst nightmare.

I sure hope the Rudyphile purge ends soon. I'd like to get back to bashing Democrats instead of fellow Republicans, even those who I may disagree with on their choice of a candidate.

"I'm not comfortable with this."

I wouldn't worry too much about it, I still think Fred will run and this little gig will be suspended.

Thompson is getting just as much attention now as he would get should he announce, and doesn’t need anywhere near the cash.

I’m really baffled as to why people believe it is critical that good candidates announce very early. I can understand why a marginal or poor candidate would do so, but not why the likes of Thompson (either of them) would have to.

Frankly, I think Hitlery announcing her candidacy so early was a HUGE error for her, and several of the other Demodog candidates made the same error. It was essential, on the other hand, for candidates like Taranto and O’Dumbo to do so - for quite different reasons.

It won’t end until we are all gone so I hear. A Freeper who shall remain nameless this morning said they couldn’t wait until I am banned. So don’t count on it.

This is friggin' brilliant. Until he officially enters, he basically gets free ad time for a nationwide audience.

But, then again, that's the advantage of being a candidate who people actually want to hear.

This tells me he won’t make any announcement for at least 90 days.

Reagan was omni-present on the radio before he ran for public office (not the sportcasting stuff - but his political views and commentary).

I think he uses this a platform to get his message out and to gauge support.

Looks like he’s feeling things out.

Someone said last night this is an open-ended contract. Does anyone have a link to that news?

Fred would stand an excellant chance of getting my vote so I wish he would announce too. I have proclaimed that he needs to do it sooner rather than later in order to really have a chance for the nomination. But he apparently does not consult my advice.

I don’t think FT will take over the Paul Harvey. I think he’s still leaving the option open for running for president.

I'd agree. The "Fred Thompson Report" gives him his own ABC Radio presence that he could either continue as long as there's a demand for him, or give up if/when he decides to run. And this doesn't leave the Paul Harvey show in any kind of limbo in the meantime.

I think it's both crafty and classy.

Since he signed the contract after thinking about running, I would presume there is a clause letting him out at any time, something that wouldn’t have been in a TV show contract.

areafiftyone has expressed no hostility towards Fred nor have I and the fact she posts lots of articles about all the candidates does not mean she made this one up. Either he is or he isn’t going to do this.

My point about Fred is simple IF he really wants to run and win he needs to announce NOW. The longer he waits to do so the more difficult it will be. And I wish him well and may very well vote for him.

Do YOU think this job means he will delay any announcement even longer or won’t run at all? Word was he would be announcing the first week or so in May. Now?

Maybe his contract has an escape clause in case he runs. It would still be a good deal for ABC because of all the ratings Fred will bring.
I’d be surprised if Fred said he is giving a run serious consderation and he didn’t mean it.

Just damn! I’m very uncomfortable with some of Rudy’s past views, as you know. Don’t know if he’s “born again” or just saying that as a candidate. I’d like to think he’s not duplicitous and pandering just so he can make this run for office.

(BTW, don't respond to this post; I don't want to be a party to your FR "demise!" ;>) )

If you are hoping Fred will run (and I am as well) you should be concerned by this announcement. It says “not running” to me.
