Mexico legalises abortion amid controversy
TV3 ^ | April 24, 2007

Mexico City has voted to legalise abortion - defying the Pope, but delighting feminists in the world's second largest Catholic country.

Riot police kept 'pro-choice' and 'anti-abortion' demonstrators - carrying tiny white coffins and playing tapes of babies crying - apart.

Mexico City lawmakers voted 46 to 19 to pass a left-wing sponsored bill allowing women to abort in the first three months of pregnancy.

The abortion vote has split Mexico's 107 million people and prompted a letter last week from Pope Benedict urging Mexican bishops to oppose it.

Wasn't even close. How sad.

Yes it is sad. I wonder what effect, if any, this will have on illegal immigration. I say this in all seriousness because it could change things. I'm just not sure how.

If the courts keep squeezing the abortionists, there will be a reverse illegal emigration.

As World Communism marches on. Atheism is a fundamental requirement to spread Communism. But then, Mexico has been Socialist for a long time now, so it is no surprise to see Communism trickle down to the nation’s religious and moral values.

Just sad. Who is next? Ireland?

Hi.

Hopefully, many will resist. But, most of the time women simply just don't understand the psychological consequences of ripping a child from the womb. It is gross exploitation of ignorant women and girls by "doctors" for profit.

And then there are those in the debate who just don't see the gravity of the act or the slope down which such acts necessarily slide. They ridicule what they call "one issue" voters, not realizing that it is the culture that sets the tone for all else. If your cultural worldview is violent and chaotic at its base, then so will be everything else --which is exactly what we have in this country.

Many folks like chaos in regard to their personal life choices and core beliefs because that is a wide road. It is easy to just do as you please. Order, on the other hand, is not as easy (or so it appears at first) because it requires recognizing restraints on sexual behavior. This in turn means being disciplined and not caving to every base instinct like a common beast of the field.

I wonder how many people would still be supportive of abortion after researching the words of their icons?

"Abortion is an extension of contraceptive technology, and the most promising extension at that. Abortion is not a stopgap between here and some future perfect contraceptive; it can very well be the chosen method of birth control for more and more women." ~ Germaine Greer, Sex and Destiny p.231

And...some FOOD for thought. Mexico even when it was against the law to perform an abortion, many doctors performed abortions, and I personally never knew of any doctors who were prosecuted or were charged. Sad, the chasm and separation between Catholics and Protestants is so vast, that many protestants refused to get on any kind of a band wagon with the Catholics. It is sad.

Sad? Tragic, and ghastly, to think the rot of secular humanism is destroying even more religious societies then the US, just when it appeared humanity was growing out of adolescence, with a respect for the Lord.

Please, this nation has more Catholics per capita than any other religious org. in the US. Our Catholics support the democrats promotoing and defending this evil, EVERY ELECTION CYCLE! Catholicism is not guiding, it is following or meandering.

This is a misleading headline. The district of Mexico City has voted to legalize abortion, not the entire country.

Actually, like most Americans, Catholics are pretty evenly-split. The Catholic vote split in the last 2 presidential elections. If you break down all those who label themselves "Catholic" and separate those who actually practise Catholicism, those who are devout, practicing Catholics are conservative.

Mexico is Catholic in name mostly. Has been since the 1910-1920.

I saw these pictures and other similar ones yesterday. Why is it that gays (pretty obvious in some of the other pictures, as well) love abortion so?

I read a statement in the Mexican press today from the head of the main council of Evangelical Christian Churches in Mexico. He said that the Evangelicals will accept whatever is decided by the Mexico city legislature, regardless, because “Evangelicals support the laws of Mexico.” Pretty sad - I think Evangelicals in the US are generally opposed to abortion, but apparently not in Mexico, where they seem to think whatever is legal is moral.

It’s a wonder the Church survived in Mexico after the heavy persecutions and legal restrictions it suffered in the earlier part of the 20th century. That said, US foundations - such as the Ford, Rockefeller and Packard Foundations - have been pouring big bucks into pro-abortion activities in Mexico at least since the 1980s, more than 20 years. I’m surprised Mexico held out as long as it did.

The sad thing is that in the minds of many of them, this is making them more “modern” - and thus more like the US. It’s depressing to think that we’re practically synonymous with abortion in the eyes of much of the world.

Dear Friend, you summed that up very well.

The sad truth is that what one generation is willing to tolerate, the next generation will accept and expand upon til immorality becomes a way of life for modern man.

Is there any doubt that God is going to abandon these countries who mock Him!

I don,t know if there is any country left that God would be willing to protect anymore. Can anyone name one?
