I thought this was interesting:

Some Statistics from the USA

In 1999, there were 28,874 gun-related deaths in the United States - over 80 deaths every day. (Source: Hoyert DL, Arias E, Smith BL, Murphy SL, Kochanek, KD. Deaths: Final Data for 1999. National Vital Statistics Reports. 2001;49 (8).)

Between 1993-1999, gun deaths in the United States have declined 27%. (SOURCE: http://www.cdc.gov/ncipc/wisqars/default.htm, WISQARS, National Center for Injury Control and Prevention, accessed March, 2002.)

In 1999, 58% of all gun deaths were suicides, and 38% were homicides. (SOURCE: Hoyert DL, Arias E, Smith BL, Murphy SL, Kochanek, KD. Deaths: Final Data for 1999. National Vital Statistics Reports. 2001;49 (8).)

Interesting stats.

I found this one paticuarly surprising:

“58% of all gun deaths were suicides”

Sure but also ask yourself why America holds the monopoly on these school/college tragedies

They don't

Doesn’t the UK have tight “gun control” laws? So it’s mainly the UK government and UK criminals who have guns? Maybe if they had a Second Amendment the problem would correct itself.

This is really unbelievable. The WP article, at least in the headline, makes it sound as if Great Britain is doing just peachy, and peopl ehave beaten their guns into plowshares.

The reality is gun crimes have absolutely skyrocketed. I mean, the body of the article tells a completely different story than the headline.

No gun control in Black. Gun control in Blue.

A neat thing about the site you give:

http://www.crimestatistics.org.uk/output/Page40.asp

Is that you can click on the crime categories on the left and get a new chart. It looks like things either stay the same or get worse with gun control.

‘Using your figures, the US has 5 times the population and only 3 times the murder rate per thousand.

As one who understands both maths and statistics, I only need ask you if you can understand that.’

Clearly you don’t understand either. The figures are per 1000 population, so the murder rate in the US is three times that of the UK, irrespective of whether the population of either country is one thousand or one billion. That is the point of quoting per capita, it removes the need to adjust for differing populations!

‘Doesn’t the UK have tight “gun control” laws? So it’s mainly the UK government and UK criminals who have guns?’

Because most people in the UK don’t have guns and neither do the police, most criminals do not feel the need to carry guns, especially as committing any crime whilst carrying a gun in the UK adds 5 years to your sentence automatically. Personally, I own a rifle and two shotguns, but most Brits don’t see a need for a handgun.

‘Maybe if they had a Second Amendment the problem would correct itself.’

No, if we had a second ammendment, we’d have to arm the police and our annual gun murder rate might go up from 62 to 8259 like you have in the US. You must also remember that in the UK the population is overwhelmingly and democratically in favour of the handgun ban. If you held a referendum tomorrow you would get at least 90% in favour, so nothing has been forced on the electorate.

I am not in favour of gun control in the US as it would be pointless and unfair given the amount of guns in circulation and the fact that you have a heavily armed paramilitary police force. In the UK, with few guns and an unarmed police force things work well for us. Each to his own.

Yes, it’s skyrocketed from 0.48% of US gun crime levels to 0.59%. . . . . .

‘No gun control in Black. Gun control in Blue.’

Not true. Your text should read:

Extremely strict gun control in Black. Extremely Strict gun control plus total handgun ban in Blue.

To: Dont Mention the War

You do make a good point, but that aside, the fall in gun related deaths cannot be manipulated and would lend credit to the statistics which show a fall in gun related crime.

Now “WC” in Europe will stand for Washington Compost, rather than Water Closet.
