Hillary Clinton invoked Harriet Tubman at a mega-fund-raiser last night, telling young supporters she'd fight to "take back the White House" just as the escaped slave fought to free others.
The Democratic presidential hopeful brought out the whole family for the "low-dollar" event at the West Side's Pier 94. But Bill Clinton and their daughter, Chelsea, left the limelight to the candidate, who found herself struggling with a faulty microphone.
"This reminds me of one of my favorite American heroines, Harriet Tubman," the senator told 1,800 cheering supporters when her mike was restored.
"She made it to freedom after having been a slave and she got to New York and she could have been so happy . . . but she kept going back down South to bring other freed slaves to freedom.
"And she used to say, 'No matter what happens, keep going,' " Hillary Clinton said. "So we're going to keep going until we take back the White House!"
The pier party catered to a younger crowd, with cheap seats going for $100. Earlier in the day, she cashed in with a VIP reception and $1,000 minimum dinner for more than 100 lawyers.
Her office downplayed the expected haul - at least $250,000 - but a Clinton .financial backer said she would probably rake in a lot more. "It should be about $1 million," he said.
While her husband didn't say much at last night's event, it marks a stepped-up use of the former President, who is set to do two or three events a week, when he's not working on his next book or his global foundation.
The candidate worked her own cause yesterday after pushing the Federal Emergency Management Agency to bail out people ravaged by recent floods in Westchester County. Touring battered Mamaroneck with FEMA boss David Paulison, she said it was up to President Bush to get aid flowing.
"We are trying to help you as much as we can," Clinton told 78-year-old Liz Covington, hugging the woman, who had to flee her swamped home.

Harriet will be very pleased at the mention.
Comparing her career goals to the hardships Harriet Tubman endured is egomaniacal, and the audience response shows how degraded our culture has become.
She is shameless. I keep thinking that she can’t sink any lower, but she keeps surprising me. And, she ain’t no wheres tired.
oh puleeze. She ain’t got the gonads to kick her slimy cheating spouse to the curb let alone fight for any poor woman living in some Louisiana swamp.... like she cares. Give me a break. sheesh.
Well, Hillary knows all about what life on the plantation was like. She’s very big on these slave analogies, apparently. Invoking Harriet Tubman’s memory. Maybe she will send some to the history books to learn who Harriet Tubman was.
...until we take back the White House!
“Power and money - the twin motors in the Hillary Hummer Car”
Did she use her black accent?
Obama must really be eating into her black support.
“...an’ you know what I be talkin’ ‘bout!”
This woman is absolutely shameless. Yeah, like an upper-middle-class white girl from the Chicago suburbs has anything in common with what Tubman went through. Sheesh. I’m amazed how well Rat pandering seems to work with the black community.

Hillary to so full of crap.
The very sad thing in all this, is not that Hillary stoops to such low levels, or that she pretends to be what she’s not just to gain votes (nice Southern accent Hillary), but that people actually pay to see that beeyotch and then they believe she’s sincere. Ugh!!!
LOL...
I’m driving some of my daughter’s class to the Tubman house/museum in a couple days.
I don’t think this tack would even play well here, where Tubman actually lived and did her work...
I’m beginning to think Hitlery is sounding desperate, with the voters now starting to consider Gore and sKedwards seriously...
Pander, pander, pander!
Fight like Harriet Tubman? I misheard her. I thought Hillary said her thighs looked like a tub of margarine.
I wonder if it was a largely black audience? If so that would show that she wants to pander to minorities.
She made her comments about Republicans running Congress like a plantation to a black group on Martin Luther King Day. Does she really think that black people have this innate identification with plantations? Does she think that any of them ever worked on a plantation and know first hand about it?
You know billious was sitting back thinking to himself, “Hmmm. Who is this Harriet chick that ‘just keeps on going’ - is she hawt?”
“I’ll faaht laahk Harriet Tubman.”
Do we have the Kentucky Fried 3 version on YouTube yet?
