Last week, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Arizona Senator John McCain both gained support in the race for the GOP nomination. This week, the top four contenders all lost ground. But, through it all, Giuliani remains on top with a double digit lead.
The latest Rasmussen Reports national poll shows Giuliani with 28%, thirteen points more than McCain’s total of 15%. Former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson remains undeclared but in third place with 12% support. Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney remains slightly behind Thompson at 10%.
The stability in the GOP competition stands in stark contrast to the Democrats where Illinois Senator Barack Obama has gained ground steadily and is now tied with New York Senator Hillary Clinton.
Giuliani has regained his status as the most popular candidate in either party—62% now have a favorable opinion of him. McCain is viewed favorably by 55%, Thompson by 35%, and Romney by 32%. See updated favorability ratings and general election match-ups for all Republican and Democratic candidates
A separate survey found that 29% of all voters say they would definitely vote for Giuliani if he is on the ballot in November 2008. Thirty-four percent (34%) would definitely vote against him. Those numbers are a bit weaker for Giuliani than they were a month ago, but they are still the best of any Republican Presidential hopeful. For McCain, the numbers are 23% definitely for and 35% definitely against. Those figures have changed little over the past month.
Illinois Senator Barack Obama (D) draws the best overall numbers of any candidate at this time—33% definitely for and 33% definitely against.
Rasmussen Reports releases updated polling data on the Republican nominating contest every Tuesday. Results for the Democrats are updated on Mondays. The current survey is based upon national telephone interviews with 579 Likely Republican Primary Voters conducted April 16-19, 2007. If Obama gets elected, either as POTUS or as VP, you know that any criticism of his job performance will be labeled “racist” and debate will be shut down. That makes him an ideal candidate - race card trumps all criticism. And if Hillary is in office, ‘sexist’ will be her charge against criticism. Policitcal Correctness will be the dominant defense of the indefensible.

IF, and the odds are very good right now, Giuliani wins the nomination, Jim Robinson is going to have a very hard decision to make on how to moderate his website. I have the utmost respect for what he has accomplished here, but I do not envy what he would be facing if Giuliani wins.
FR would have to manage the split between those who will back the parties choice against Hillary or Obama, and those who will choose to go third party or sit out the election and snipe at Giuliani. To a much lesser degree, FR went through this in 2000, this would be much tougher. Just like in real life, politics are personal, and the attachment to ideology and beliefs are rock solid for many, maybe for most at FR.
I still say it will be Rudy/Fred or Fred/Rudy in ‘08.
No, you are right. I have never sat out an election yet, nor even been tempted to vote for a Dim, but this perspective matchup makes me wince.

The damage a Rudy presidency would do to the GOP image as a party of corrupt, big government politicians is as bad as you could get. Conservatives will get tarnished.
The damage that Clinton or Obama, or really any Democrat as far left as she/he, would do to this country as a free nation is tremendous, but at least all that damage would be “blamed” on a Democrat.
What a mess. No matter who gets elected my mission is always to push conservative positions. I have plenty of practice in futility with Specter and Casey and Fast Eddy here in PA.

Lots of Thompson and Romney numbers reflect lack of name recognition. Romney has the money to change this and Thompson has the personality to change this. These numbers point to a wide-open race.

You have a far right Christian conservative currently in the White House. I would say the GOP image as a fiscal spendthrift party has solidifed. The 'scratch my back for donations' image has not only been magnified, it's thriving. As far as I can see, having a President on the right has not not helped prevent the creation of the same image you are concerned that Giuliani would propagate.
Yeah, 12% is the best Thompson has had (a few recent polls showed him at 10%). He'll creep slowly until he announces. look for him at 14% at the end of May when he announces, and 20% by October (and this will be before he steals the show at the debates). The man can can talk and persuade. 61% was his worst showing in his 2 Senate races.

We see it already in the hyperbole surrounding the Duke Cunningham scandals re the GOP. Corruption charges stick to the GOP, the Dems wiggle out because the MSM gives them a huge pass.
Why would Guiliani have the same issues but have them even more closely connected to the Presidency ? Just look at his associates - try Kerik as an example - and the projects undertaken by Guiliani’s firm. If you don’t think a negative image of Haliburton was hung around Cheney’s neck over and over to taint his reputation, just wait til the MSM start talking about all this 24/7.
