In February's poll, the former New York City mayor had 39 percent of the support of Republican voters but that dropped to 35 percent in the April 17-18 survey.
Arizona Sen. John McCain, who opposes abortion but supports embryonic stem cell research, has dropped as well. He's slid from 19 percent in February to 16 percent in April.
The leading candidates have dropped because Republican voters are shifting to more conservative presidential candidates or others whose names have been bandied about as possible GOP nominees.
Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor who recently changed his position on abortion, moved up from 6 percent in February to 10 percent in the April Fox News poll.
Meanwhile Newt Gingrich and Fred Thompson, who have not announced a bid, jumped from 7 percent to 9 percent and from not being in the poll to 8 percent, respectively.
Looking at other candidates, ex-Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson moved up from 2 to 4 percent, pro-life Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback stayed the same at two percent as did pro-life Rep. Duncan Hunter. Mike Huckabee, the former Arkansas Gov. had one percent but no other candidates reached one percent in the poll.
Some 11 percent of Republicans were unsure.
Last week, Giuliani came under fire for telling pro-life advocates to get over the abortion issue.
"Our party has to get beyond issues like that," he told the Des Moines Register newspaper.
He also appeared to indicate that the Republican Party won't gain supporters if it retains its pro-life position.
"Our party is going to grow, and we are going to win in 2008 if we are a party characterized by what we're for, not if we're a party that's known for what we're against," he said.
Those comments followed the flap on abortion funding.
“Actually I resent your attitude that I am coming to you with little mantras.”
Sorry, but I’ve seen it too many times before, along with “only rudy can beat hillary” and “only rudy can fight the WOT”. None of those claims are based on any facts, but merely feelings.
“. For every person who fails to vote rather than vote for a RINO it means the opposition needs one less vote to win”
Fails to vote?
Politicians are not entitled to anyone’s vote. They have to earn it. If they fail to earn it because they’re a liberal running in party that is powered by a conservative base, then the people who refuse to vote for that person because it would be against their principles are NOT to blame.
Yawn.
RCP Averages (4/23)
Guiliani 31.8
McCain 19.6

Don’t Know 10.0
ABC/WAPO poll
43. (ASKED OF LEANED REPUBLICANS) Regardless of who you yourself support, which candidate do you think is most likely to win the Republican nomination for president?
Rudy Giuliani 42.0
Rather than back someone who can win the general election you and your ilk have only one reply: “Purity over Victory!” If you have your way we’d all better get use to the idea of a President Hillary Clinton for the next EIGHT years!
Nope, sorry. If Hillary wins so be it. At least our enemy will be more defined.
42% is a loss.
There are some lines one just can’t cross, son. When you grow up a little, you might realize that. If you never do, then I pity you and your “ilk”.
"Better a democrat with an energized opposition than a leftist Republican with no opposition".
What a great tag--that sums it up PERFECTLY!!
As I repeatedly say on here,
"Liberal Republicans like JulieAnnie are MUCH MORE DANGEROUS than liberal democrats,,,because liberal Republicans BLUR THE DISTINCTION between conservatism and liberalism--MAKING LIBERALISM MUCH MORE ACCEPTABLE!
Speaking only for myself, as long as one candidate is even marginally better for my country than the other I will vote for that candidate. In that case I am voting against the lesser of the two, not for the better of the two.
As long as the vote count starts out at 0-0 and every vote counts the same it is my contention that not voting for one is tantamount to voting for the other.
It is an interesting question though, and frankly your response has made me give it more thought than I have ever given it in the past! That’s one of the things I really love about FR, even the disagreements can be enlightening.
Come Nov. of 2008 if Rudy is the Republican nominee and Hillary is the Democratic nominee then you can’t deny the absolute truth in the statement ‘only Rudy can beat Hillary’!
Your just a kid, 65 is the time life just starts right? (Or there abouts) The miles don't always count, my father lived life in the fast lane but he didn't settle down until he was in his 50's, no one thought he'd make it to 60 but here he is in his 70's now.
Funny how things work.
Re your post #31, you admit that Guiliani is a RINO and then go on to say that Republican conservatives will destroy the party to have him.
Let me make it clearer. I don't admit he is a RINO, I am stating it as a point in an argument. I am saying that Republican conservatives will have to support unelectable candidates who have their values AND that this is preferable to voting to Rudy.
It is better to lose than to have Rudy and destroy the GOP for years to come. .
You know full well what kind of judges Hillary will appoint. You know full well the kind of administration she will have. To me you’re better off with the unknown in Rudy if the choice is between the two of them.
Although I have no argument with those who feel differently. It’s a personal thing and everyone is certainly entitled to their opinion!
When I was in the Physician’s Assistant program, many years ago, I worked with a doc who would write PPPPPT on a patient’s chart. He made me wait the full six weeks of the clinical rotation on his service before he told me it meant “piss poor protoplasm, poorly put together”! That’s how I feel some days!
Look at the chart. In an average of polls since the beginning of Feb. Rudy has been in a sideways pattern.
McCaine in a decline.
Actually Romney seems to be gaining some traction.
We all knew these polls were going to tighten up anyway.
oops wrong RCP page
“what happens to the money people pledged if it isnt spent”
I guess up into the time they give him a check they can change their mind...
One would hope ... the Rodham-rodent carried millions from her Senate run over to the current primaries didn’t she?
“but are conservatives prepared to lose the presidency to gain control of their party?”
Yes, in numbers that would make it happen. Good reason not to support Rudy...
Rudy doesn't have a clue. Abortion is part, an essential part, of a much larger issue: the survival of the traditional family. He sees abortion as an isolated issue. The social conservatives I know do not.
When he tells conservatives to "get over" abortion and gay partnerships, the conservatives I know hear him saying: "Traditional families--especially mom and dad marriages with children--are dark, reactionary, dangerous, and discriminatory. Leave the dark ages and come into the light of social liberalism where everything and anything is a family, marriages are temporary and strictly for personal convenience, and children are a nuisance."
Just proving the point we have been making to the Rudy fans who jumped the gate. Voters wipe the stars out of their eyes when they realize that Rudy spits on the values they hold dear. As soon as debates start and voters hear the other candidates visions for our country, Rudy will not hold against conservative candidates.
One of these things is not like the other
One of these things just doesn’t belong
Can you tell which thing is not like the others
By the time I finish this song?
Did you guess which thing was not like the others?
Did you guess which thing just doesn’t belong?
If you guessed this one is not like the others,
Then you’re absolutely...right!
