"He said he didn't feel like he had earned it," Thomas said, noting the president looked thinner in person than on television.
I found this little snippet in the article "amchugh" posted...
I hate to say that I have differences of political opinion with the commander in chief, but it is so far down the totem pole of priorities, that I absolutely have no hesitation to respect the character and leadership he has demonstrated every single day of his presidency in regards to his sworn duty in the defense of this country...
Thats what the enemies of this country wish to destroy, because if they can get the top guy, it destroys us all...
I believe he deserves the recognition and respect that the award represents...

Yes he does deserve this honor. I think the enemies within (Congressional DIMs come to mind!) are as dangerous as the ones who are terrorizing the middle east. They want to take him down, no matter what danger they put the rest of us in. He “gets” it...the danger. God bless him.

"We feel like emotional wounds and scars are as hard to carry as physical wounds," Thomas said. Thanks for pinging me to this touching article, Deb. Remember on yesterday's Dose where I commented on the saddness in GWB's eyes? He took us through 9/11, the tough decisions on the war, and so on. He fought for reelection, and then, less than a year later, Katrina hit. On the heels of Katrina, the "summer soldiers and sunshine patriots" among conservative pundits and forums like FR all turned on him about Harriet Miers. They didn't just turn on him; many of them were vicious.
I think Katrina followed by the Miers dustup took something out of him that he has never quite been able to get back. Burnout happens to the best of us given enough stress and pressure.
This priceless and wonderfully generous gesture by Mr. and Mrs. Thomas tells me others see it too. The emotional wounds and scars this President has endured are indeed as hard to carry as physical wounds. I'm so grateful to the Thomas' for doing something to comfort the President -- for doing something I would do in a heartbeat if I could.

You hit the nail squarely on the head, Wolfstar!
He has seen the face of satan himself and knows that he
stands, with God’s help, between the monsters and his
beloved country...and us.
Just keep praying for this man. The Thomases’ gesture
touched his soul.
