April 30, 2007 issue - The three students from Wilberforce University, near Xenia, Ohio, had a tremendous fondness for 9-millimeter pistols. They bought them as many as 25 at a time from the accommodating owner of the Hole in the Wall Gun Shop, James Dillard. As required by Ohio law, the buyers duly attested that the guns were for their personal use, which was good enough for Dillard. In fact, according to federal prosecutors, the pistols were passed to a gunrunner who resold them to street gangs. Seventy-six 9mm semiautomatics were sold to just one gang, the Double II Bloods of East Orange, N.J. Jamel Coward, who already had a .45, bought a Leinad 9mm and went out with a friend to try it out. On people. They drove down a street in what they believed to be the territory of the rival Crips, and Coward commenced firing. He wounded three bystanders before a bullet struck 19-year-old Erron Lewin in the neck. Lewin, who belonged to no gang, died on the spot.

Personally I love my Glock 19. It is a great little pistol. And I ain't giving it up!

This VT thing finally got me off my arse to buy that pistol I’ve been saying I was gonna get for 3 years (I’m a long gun guy, but the VT incident and the ensuing MSM hysterics over it convinced me I needed a hogleg). Several friends have sold me on the 1911-A1. I’m shopping around now.

I got a good deal on a 1969 Makarov right before the AWB in the early 90s. It’s a nice little piece resmebling a ppk and it’s quite accurate after being used by Russian cops for some years.

BUT...

A person who didn't really comply with the spirit of the law (the gun shop salesman) sold a bunch of guns to people that immediately *Broke* existing laws by reselling them to a bunch more people who immediately *Broke* existing laws by using them to shoot people.

And the answer to this? I expect, more laws.

My wife has an XD9 (awfully nice shooting gun). Had I known they would turn out to be so evil, I’d have bought another one.

My 5 fool 1 inch, 102 lb wife seems to manage pretty effectively.

And IMHO, recoil can be an accuracy issue in some of the larger calibers.

That’s what I’ve heard. I’ve never fired a 9mm, the only handguns I’ve ever fired have been a small .380 semi-auto and a .38 revolver. I had no trouble controlling the recoil on either one (even though I was a lousy shot), and from what I’ve heard, the recoil on a 9mm isn’t really much worse than a .38 Special, is it?

Around here on FR, on the “help me buy a gun” threads, seems like the 9mm Parabellum isn’t a good self-defense round. .45 ACP is better, I guess?

I imagine that any firearm dealer here would question an attempted purchase of 25 pistols. Probably would refuse the sale.

Well, now, a liberal mind reading this would conclude that we could reduce homicides by almost 50% in SE-LA and by 60% in Philly just by banning 9mm handguns!

Not with my S&W 1911A1. And I ain't the burliest guy out there by any means. Having said that, if someone wants to legally purchase weapons and then illegally resell them, how is passing MORE laws going to resolve that issue? Gee, how about enforcing the over 20K laws we already have on the books?

Took my mom and sis shooting yesterday. Second time for mom, first for sis.

Had them firing .38Special and .44Special out of S&W .357Mag and .44Mag.

They loved it. Mom was a deadeye too with that .44. Both were hitting the targets with every shot at 7yds.

My wife is recoil sensitive and loves her Glock 19 (9mm).

The changeover to [9mm handguns] began after a notorious 1986 shoot-out in Miami between three carloads of FBI agents and two heavily armed robbery suspects. Two agents (as well as the suspects) were killed, leading to a demand for more firepower for officers, who still typically carried the venerable .38-caliber Police Special.

Inaccurate. The ineffective rounds used by the feds in that infamous shootout were in fact 114 gr. 9mm rounds, and the subsequent changes were to a heavier round (I think 124 gr.) of the same caliber.

The 1911 is a great pistol, but you have to constantly practice with the thing to be able to hit anything.

For a good personal defense pistol - I’d go with a Sig.

As someone in sales, the only question that comes to my mind is "Cash, check, or charge?"
