SUITE LIFE FOR RUDY; HITS SWANKY HOTELS ALONG CAMPAIGN TRAIL
NY POST ^ | April 23, 2007 | MAGGIE HABERMAN

Posted on 04/23/2007 5:39:55 AM PDT by Liz

He's running for president, but some of Rudy Giuliani's campaign-trail hotels have been fit for a king. Giuliani rented rooms at a string of high-end hotels over the last three months, his campaign filings show. They included the swank Fairmont San Francisco, the Arizona Biltmore hotel in Phoenix and the Hotel Andalucia in Santa Barbara, where the campaign paid $2,457 at the end of last month. Some $4,600 went to the Conrad Hotel in Indianapolis, where he held a fund-raiser co-hosted by former Mayor Stephen Goldsmith, a policy adviser to Giuliani. Despite light campaign travel...Giuliani's three-month tab on out-of-town hotels was $48,500......Giuliani's campaign topped the $35,082 (Clinton's) team spent on hotels.

"It's a bad message," said U of Va political-science expert Larry Sabato. "Americans expect their candidates to work hard and, yes, grovel a bit running for president. And they want to know that you're sacrificing."

Giuliani campaign sources said two bills were mislabeled in election filings - a Conrad Hotel bill for roughly $7,000, and a $1,500 bill at the Marriott West Palm Beach in Florida, where he stayed to attend a roundtable discussion......Giuliani's hotel bills are for himself and staffers, but that costs rose for certain events, such as ones involving members of the campaign-finance team.

BACKSTORY SOURCE: NY POST 4/14/07 Giuliani's camp spent about $5.7 million, for a "burn rate" - how fast a campaign spends cash compared to raising it - of 37 percent in the first quarter. The bulk of Giuliani's campaign expenditures were for payroll, consultants and travel expenses. Among his plane fees was $45,500 to a California charter firm and roughly $25,000 to use the company jet of breast cancer-drug firm Abraxis Bioscience.

How many candidates from either party have stayed at the motel 6?
Of all the things to investigate Rudy or any candidate for that matter, they chose this?

So what?

I am no Rudy fan, but this is just silly. Attack him on his policies, attack him on his actions, but this smacks of desperation.

Exactly. None of the candidates will be staying in cheap hotels.

I wonder how many hundreds-of-dollar “tips” have been paid to the bell captain for extracurricular services?

I’m no Rudy fan, either, but I won’t stay at a Motel 6. Nice hotels are generally worth the money, IMHO.

I’m not running for President, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Not only that, if I were out on the road so much, I would want to stay at a nice hotel. When you’re tired, you want a nice place, with convenience, and comfort. Heck, I would want to stay at some of these places, too.

I can’t support Rudy for President, but this does seem petty. Given the staff, the meetings behind closed doors, its more efficent to have a large suite, a couple of them adjoining actually.

The usual Liberal method... throw crap on the wall. Don’t stop. See what sticks.

Obviously, the staff of the Post has marching orders to publish a daily negative story about Rudy, no matter what.

“Rudy received parking ticket in 1992! Didn’t pay until 3 weeks later!”
“Rudy once rented ‘A Clockwork Orange’. Does he endorse violence against women?”
“Rudy’s ex-staff member complains: ‘He yelled at me once! It ruined my life!”

Before any lurking Post members start following up on these leads, they’re all make-believe, of course.

But the Post’s hit-pieces are all picked up by the anti-Rudy crowd (on either side), and posted through the blogosphere, where the Rudy-haters here can post: “See?! See?!” and have another opportunity to post their “fact” sheet, proving that Rudy is the biggest liberal loser since John F. Kerry... playing right into the Democrats hands once again.

Exactly, Also the bigger swankier hotels are in a league of there own when it comes to privacy and security. Not to mention they have the facilities to handle large groups of people that inevitably follow a campaign.

True enough. Its unneccesary, his track record on domestic issues will eventually keep him from the nomination.

Sad, but this is what politics has become in the year 2007.

I believe we had one president who rolled in his “regular American” ways, wore sweaters, and generally carried on in an affected way while he was president and continues to embarrass us to this day. INcidentally, I would be willing to bet that he also knew intimately the price of bread and milk in the supermarket. Much good did it ever do him. If Rudy has the money to stay in first class places, more power to him. Looks good on him.

Wrong candidate, sir - we are discussing Rudy, not a Clinton.

Oh, look, it’s Larry “Macaca” Sabato. I’m still amazed this loser has ANY credibility left after what he did to George Allen.

You haven't heard? The new rule aroud here is that it's not enough to simply support Duncan Hunter or non-candidate Fred Thompson in the primary. You have to have "Rudy Derangement Syndrome" too. Now, away with you, you insufficiently Rudy-hating liberal, you. The Inquisition has spoken!
