Al-Qaeda ‘planning big British attack’
The Sunday Times ^ | April 22 2007 | Dipesh Gadher

Posted on 04/22/2007 8:22:17 PM PDT by noname247

AL-QAEDA leaders in Iraq are planning the first “large-scale” terrorist attacks on Britain and other western targets with the help of supporters in Iran, according to a leaked intelligence report.

Spy chiefs warn that one operative had said he was planning an attack on “a par with Hiroshima and Nagasaki” in an attempt to “shake the Roman throne”, a reference to the West.

Another plot could be timed to coincide with Tony Blair stepping down as prime minister, an event described by Al-Qaeda planners as a “change in the head of the company”.

The intelligence report also makes it clear that senior Al-Qaeda figures in the region have been in recent contact with operatives in Britain.

It follows revelations last year that up to 150 Britons had travelled to Iraq to fight as part of Al-Qaeda’s “foreign legion”. A number are thought to have returned to the UK, after receiving terrorist training, to form sleeper cells.

“A member of this network is reportedly involved in an operation which he believes requires AQ Core authorisation. He claims the operation will be on ‘a par with Hiroshima and Naga-saki’ and will ‘shake the Roman throne’. We assess that this operation is most likely to be a large-scale, mass casualty attack against the West.”

Analysts believe the reference to Hiroshima and Naga-saki, where more than 200,000 people died in nuclear attacks on Japan at the end of the second world war, is unlikely to be a literal boast.

“It could be just a reference to a huge explosion,” said a counter-terrorist source. “They [Al-Qaeda] have got to do something soon that is radical otherwise they start losing credibility.”

FWIW, I saw Steven Emerson discussing this subject on one of the news nets this morning. Emerson was of the opinion that info was put out for public consumption because the government thinks this threat is legit.

As I recall there was also supposed to be an attack over the Xmas holidays. The quote from some government source was something like "It's not a question of if, but of how big".

Of course, if we are reading it in the papers, it is probably propaganda.

But the comment about “the Roman throne” interests me. I doubt they are talking of England, but more than likely the Pope.

I would remind everyone that it was Jimmy Carter who stopped our development of the neutron bomb, which would take care of Mecca and other Mideast trouble makers in a way that would allow us to go back in and extract their oil at our leisure without waiting 10,000 years.

“Spain’s security service has warned the government that Spain and France are most in danger of being attacked by a north African wing of al-Qaeda...”

But, but, how can this be? Spain’s goddamned president ran like an emasculated vagina before Al-Gayda! He bombastically stated that the Iraq war was based “on a lie” to kiss terrorist ass! He said Al-Gayda had “nothing to do” with Iraq! Now his terrorist “johns” are going to attack Spain! How can this beeeee? (sarc)

You’re EXACTLY right. The west doesn’t have the balls to kick the living sh#t out of Iran, as it so richly deserves. Must be too much money for the politicians to make from them.

The Brits have done everything AQ has asked of them.

I wasn't Americans who were the Crusaders.

The Muslims never forget. - tom

Thank you for your service to your country, my country’s ally. Please don’t pay attention to the nasty remarks about the UK, as most of us here do not think this way.

That paticular sailor is a disgrace to his country.

I don’t suppose you have seen the pictures of him that were released this past weekend?

Care to elaborate? Did someone rearrange his face?

It's not a wind up, that is the same Arthur Batchelor that was said to be traumatised. The pictures were taken not long after his release. Shameful.

Thanks.
It does annoy me sometimes, i’ve been to Iraq twice and afghanistan once since 2001, and since joining in 1990, i’ve been to many ‘hot’areas.
I like America, I have friends there and I go to visit them whenever I get some R & R. It’s important that we stick together.

Thanks for the welcome. I 1st started to visit the forum in 2000 when I was on exchange with the US army. I’ve made some good friends in the US and may’ve influenced one into taking the decision to join the fight against terrorism, and i’m sure he’ll make a very good addition to the war...

Very true!

Of course, your media, like ours, are always more than happy to trumpet the bad news about the military.

Something evil is coming and we are in a 9/10 mindset arguing if Rudy is a RINO
I do believe, dog, that the 9/10 mindset is not universal, and it is far gone where it counts in public policy. Remember that politics are often distinct from policy. While the politics are distressing just now, I do not believe that the delusions are universal. We have good people at many, many levels of government, business, military, and thought that are concerned, aware, and working on the post 9/11 world in which we live.

One would hope.
I’d rather we nuke Mecca.

I think the U.S. would do nothing.
Between our bowing to the UN and our pu—y Congress, we MIGHT have sanctions and harsh words, but that would be all.

Excuse me?.

We are fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan against this evil bunch and have just convicted 4 Muslim bombers.

Please tell me what you mean by your comment,as we have withdrawn troops in Iraq merely to relocate them to Afghanistan and we have INCREASED our presence in that country.

We have also INCREASED MI5/MI6 survillance in Britain and Europe.
