The independent agency charged with assessing the effectiveness of the World Bank has issued a searing indictment of Paul Wolfowitz’s leadership, warning that his actions are undermining the bank’s ability to pursue development work.
In a formal statement, which the bank’s board will consider this week, the Independent Evaluation Group said “development effectiveness is being jeopardised by serious governance problems that have recently come to light”.
The IEG statement comes as the board prepares to reach a judgment as to whether Mr Wolfowitz broke bank rules or ethics when he ordered its human resources chief to give his girlfriend Shaha Riza a large pay rise.
Pressure on Mr Wolfowitz to resign intensified today when 42 of the bank’s most senior former executives called on Mr Wolfowitz to step down in an open letter published in the Financial Times. The former executives said “there is only one way for Mr Wolfowitz to further the mission of the bank: he must resign”.

What facts left out of the WSJ article would contradict the facts in the article? Specifically...
She's in effect the union leader of the bank, which Wolfowitz was sent to clean up. If she weren't calling for his head, I'd know he wasn't doing his job.

Union leaders don’t like favoritism. When one worker gets a $60,000 raise and the rest of the workers get 1% or 2% raises and she’s not a particularly stellar performer, it’s their job to ask questions about favoritism. Somehow, Riza, with no unusual merit, managed to score $60,000 extra in her pay packet just because of whom she was sleeping with. You can see why the others would be resentful, they thought they were bankers, not hookers.
I hope so.

Union leaders like accountability less. Is there some fact in the WSJ article which is incorrect, which contradicts the thesis? Is there some unmentioned fact which does?

I couldn't agree more.
When the facts aren’t on your side, attack your accusers. By his very statement, he shows that he does not have the facts on his side. He’s going after people, that is his tactic, he’s revealed it well.
I personally hope he burns the place to the ground before he leaves.
And just for the record, it isn't physically possible to damage the 'reputation' of the WB.

Here's Wolfies real problem: "“Let’s remember that there are two parties for every corrupt transaction,” he continued. “Developed countries giving money share responsibility for this problem. Every development institution, including the World Bank, has a responsibility to safeguard every dollar and set standards we can be proud of.”
This was from a speech given at Wharton Business College.
Here's another example: The Bush administration appointee will promote anti-corruption measures, accountability, good governance, women's empowerment, education, health, increased infrastructure and agriculture. "Whether investing in education, health, infrastructure, agriculture, the environment, we in the World Bank must be sure that we deliver results," Wolfowitz will say, according to bank officials. "And by results, let me be clear. I mean results that have a real impact in the day-to-day lives of the poor. We stand accountable to them," according to a section of Wolfowitz's speech that was cited by bank officials.
There's three examples for you.
The reason the long knives are out for Wolfowitz is that he's beginning to root out the corruption that's been endemic at the World Bank for decades.
If he does decide to leave, I hope Bush appoints John Bolton to the job.
But I truly hope he stays right where he is for now.

Wrong country, pal. He talked about IRAQ, which is not AMERICA! His true loyalties are to his personal project in Iraq, which he expects American troops (but certainly not himself) to give their lives for.
As for the second speech, notice how he says America is just as bad as Africa because ‘two countries’ are involved in corruption. What he’s trying to do is equivocate Africa’s corruption with America and say they are all alike. Sorry, you flunked on both counts. Show one instance where Wolf can reveal any love for AMERICA? You can’t. I’ve already looked myself and couldn’t find anything. It’s just not his thing. America is this place he harvests his personal benefits from and then moves on to clink cocktails with the international bureaucrats with. He uses America for his own Iraq obsessions but that’s about it. That’s not the same as loving America or caring about its welfare. he doesn’t. He’s a leftist.
