It’s so easy though to believe the worst about another candidate, isn’t it?

In my opinion, Fair Opinion has lost what little cedibility he had left with this nasty little stunt.

Liberal troll? BINGO!

If he was’t running, what needed management and consulting?

Political fundraising accounts have to be kept completely kosher, or the Feds will come after the politician. It's wise that he had someone making sure any reports were filed, and all the info the Feds needed was transmitted. I suspect this is why he hired his son's consulting firm. Why not hire a family member he trusts?

Oh, come now, FairOpinion’s only errors here was to be gullible enough to think Fred Thompson would give money to Hillary Clinton, and to believe that OpenSecrets couldn’t get it wrong.

FO was quick to ask to have his posts pulled when the error was discovered.

FO has been ridiculed for his error. Isn’t that enough? I’d rather attack the things he says about Rudy being conservative than continue this silly personal attack.

Gullible? Nah.

Overly anxious and gleeful to post a gotcha that turned out to be bogus.

Fair Opinion = Dan Rather

"...“Mark Corallo, a spokesman for the former senator, said Daniel Thompson is paid to manage the fund-raising operation and file campaign-finance reports with the FEC. ‘If you look at other PACs, such as Hillary Clinton, John Edwards or Barack Obama, all three of them pay their PAC administrators more than double what Dan was taking to administrate the PAC,’ Mr. Corallo said.”

Yes that is true, but the Thompson PAC had virtually no money in. Half the money was given to his son to write checks and fill out forms.

Also, don't forget Hillary has a campaign staff not a manager. She is also an active Senator and a Presidential candidate.

All that said, I still think it atrocious that former politicians pass out money given to them to run for office to their relatives, past and present cronies or anything else they desire. They do not declare this money as income on their tax returns and are accountable to no one for how they disperse the funds. Spin it as you will, this is not what people who leave office should be doing.

Finally, it makes no difference what others are doing--I am sure you are right--many are doing the same thing; however, this does not make it right.

LOL

Right. I’m getting to know you better with each post of yours I read. You’re response to everything is to play it down the middle. You ain’t fooling no one with your wishy-washy politics.

FO likes to cause trouble by promoting and supporting liberals like Arnold Schwarzenegger and now Rudy Giuliani. FO`s a first class liberal and seldom offers fair opinions. He might appeal to some moderates, centrists and liberals, just not to conservatives.

I like to play the personal attacks down the middle, to be sure. They aren’t in my opinion useful to the discussion anyway, and distract from the substantive discussion of the issues.

I hope you would agree that I don’t play the issues down the middle. While my positions on some issues certainly will differ from yours, I am adamant about my positions, and not looking to compromise on them to “get along”.

But I see civility as neither liberal nor conservative, and find it costs little to even “pretend” if you like that a person is truthfully conveying their intent, even if you are certain they are not, simply because the intent isn’t as important as the result anyway.

Of course FO’s credibility is damaged by this, because we see a smarter, less gullible person would have questioned why Fred Thompson gave money to Hillary, and would have approached the issue in a manner befitting that sound reasoning.

Next time FO posts something that seems unbelievable, people will be more likely to ignore it, and that’s a fair response.

But I see no reason to accuse FO of lying about the intent here. I can’t read minds, and if FO says it was just a gullible error in judgment, what harm is it to accept the apology and move on to more substantive matters?

I know it is “fun” to attack people personally, but it is self-destructive in my opinion, and lowers the level of discourse making it harder to accomplish the goals we must reach to win back the country for it’s own sake.

“If it’s for future use, it should have been saved for future use in politics and not given to his son.”

You obviously did not read the report. Nothing was simply “given to his son”. His son did for his father’s PAC the same kind of legal, fund-raising and fund distribution tasks he did for others; that his father would have paid for, no matter who did it. (Actually he looks like he got his son pretty cheap.)

Many prominent politicians do have PACs that have hired a very close friend or relative to run them. Why? It provides a level of loyalty that permits the PAC to operate extremely close to exactly what its benefactor wants, without a lot of hands on attention by the benefactor and without a lot of second-guessing by the PAC’s manager. Since it is the benefactors money, there is nothing improper about having their own PAC run by whomever they chose. It is a private fund, not an element of the government.

I am certain the person receiving the money for consulting is paying taxes on it. And I’m certain the people who gave the money to the PAC paid taxes on it, since PAC donations are not tax-deductable.

Why do you think a candidate should have to pay any taxes on money that is collected from some people AFTER-TAX, and then given to others who PAY TAXES on it’s receipt?

“Outrageous” fees????

You obviously have never needed a big time lawyer or financial manager, nor do you know what is involved (legal expertise) in not only managing the financial affairs of a PAC, but in avoiding the labyrinth of pitfalls in the campaign finance laws. From the fees listed, it would seem that Thompson got his son’s services on the cheap.
