On May 2, a national election will be held in the Bahamas. The stakes are very high in this Island Nation. The Progresive Liberal Party (PLP) led by Prime Minister Perry Christie is up for re-election.
Former PM Hubert Ingraham of the conservative FNM wants his old job back. Ingraham is still a member of Parlimnent, but chose not to run for PM in 2002, after 2 terms as Prime Minister.
The PLP main slogan is NO Turning Back. A race baiting slogan that's purpose is to remind voters of the white minority rule. The whites last ruled in 1967 when the Bahamas was still a British Colony.
I spend several weeks a year in Eleuthera. Eleuthera is a beautiful island, 110 miles long, 2 miles wide and about 30 miles east of Nassau.
Last night, I joined a 3 mile motorcade down the long narrow, pothole filled road to Governors Harbor, which is in the center of the island. The Motorcade was led by te next Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham. 100's of people in the small villages dressed in red FNM shirts lines the streets to greet the motorcade.
The roads in Eleuthera are in terrible shape. The Glass Window Bridge that connects North Eleuthera to Eleuthera is undescibable. A one lane bridge that after repeated storms, has been knocked feet(not inches) out of place. Water and electricity are available to most but unreliable. The PLP had promised to fix all 5 years ago, now they are repeating their lies from the past.
Back to the motorcade, We arrived at a rally site in Governors Harbor, A stage, DJ, large speakers were set up. Almost a 1000 peolple were at the rally. Most were young. I have never seen young people get this excited about an election in the States. The FNM gives away Red shirts for all. Most had them on.
Speaker after Speaker blasted the PLP for their lies and corruption. One notalbe scandal, Anna Nicole Smith got a fasttrack thru Bahamian immagration. She recieved her residency in months(normaly 5-10 years) by having sex with the Immagration Minister. He resigned in disgrace.
The highlight of the 3 hour rally was a speech by the next Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham.
If you have friends or family in the Bahamas, call them, tell them to vote FNM!!!
I hope your guy wins.
Thanks for the update.

n.y.muggs... is it really you? Good grief, where have you been?! Nice to hear from you again... :o)
PS, I do plan on running for County Legis. this November.
Eleuthera is a beautiful island. Quite a few Americans spend time here. If you decide to visit, give me a shout.
Thanks for the report Kevin... Interesting you checked out the motorcade and speakers there...
