Muslim student gives life to save others in V Tech killings
Sky News ^ | Friday 20th April 2007 | Sky News

Posted on 04/20/2007 11:58:21 PM PDT by the scotsman

A survivor of the Virginia Tech massacre has been describing how a colleague died to protect others. Although badly injured, graduate student Waleed Shalaan distracted gunman Cho Seung-Hui to save another person from his bullets.

Waleed saved another student's life. The surviving student, who wishes to remain anonymous, told of Waleed's heroics through an email to his supervisor.

He describes how he was left uninjured after Cho's initial round of shots.

Meanwhile, Waleed had been wounded but was still alive.

However, when Cho later returned to the classroom to inspect for signs of life among his victims, the surviving student struggled to remain calm.

He believes he would have been shot dead were it not for Waleed's "protective movement" that distracted the gunman.

Cho turned and shot Waleed for a second time, killing him, before leaving the classroom.

Randy Dymond, a civil engineering professor, has said the student asked to him to tell the tale "so that the family of Waleed understands the sacrifice."

Shaalan's mother broke down when she heard Mr Dymond's account.

"He was trying to save someone else," she said repeatedly.

Dymond said Shaalan's body was taken to a Blacksburg mosque so classmates, teachers and friends could say goodbye before he was sent to Egypt for burial.'

WTF is a "protective movement."

How did the "saved student" divine the intentions of the "hero student?" The guy might have been rolling around the floor trying to save himself.

Hmmmm....Maybe the Dems are right and we should remove ourselves from Iraq and then Afghanistan. Most of the Arab and most of the Islamic world view us as devils for “invading”. We weren’t asked to go into Afghanistan or Iraq by the Islamic world...and %95 of the Human population feel we are danger not only to Muslims but to non-Muslims. Yes....maybe the Democrats are right....

"How are we supposed to protect the Iraqi people and spread freedom if we HATE muslims ? humm..."

Sadly,
It is more a matter of trust than of hate.
Which do I mistrust the least....
The media,
Any given liberal 'anonymous' source,
Or, any given muslim..

Do they know for sure there is only one shooter? Maybe and maybe not.

I believe the fact that there was one shooter has been established beyond doubt. Otherwise, I would agree with your comments, and add that someone severely wounded or dying may make an involuntary movement/spasm which would attract attention.

In all fairness to the student who reported this (provided it's not a hoax, which is also possible, given the anonymity), when you've survived trauma such as this, it's common to relive it over and over in one's mind searching for reasons why you are still alive while so many others have died. As a result, some random event, such as another victim involuntarily distracting the killer, assumes an overblown significance.

“Perhaps s/he isn’t excited about entering the media circus.”

My life was saved by a Christian. No media circus arrived or even cared two craps about it, although Rosie did made some snotty remarks about it.

It doesn’t seem very clear that he was attempting to draw the killer’s attention, but if that was the case, then I certainly consider him a hero.

I know some on this thread can’t get over the fact that he is Muslim, but remember as our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan go about their missions, they are accompanied by Muslim’s helping them fight the bad guys. Just because a significant percentage would in fact like to cut all our heads off, it doesn’t mean that many aren’t good people.

Good Morning Freedom_Is_Not_Free,

This story sounds like a prefabricated tale to garner sympathy for the (Releigion of Terror) followers.

Why was this story not reported initially???? I would say a great way to help out the (camel dung jockeies) with some false liberal promulgated PR.

I do not think it is kosher presently for any member of islamicfacist world to give one’s life for an infidel.

Probably some liberal weenie trying to uplift the poor throat cutting muslims (low low pond scum) image in the world.

I am sure there are those who may disagree with me. (liberals and fools)

However as Jerry Lee Lewis once said,” They can all kiss my boy.”

FINF, your comments are 100% (Spot On) and I am glad to see some “Old School” intellect on the Free Republic.

Respectfully,
NSNR

This is really poor reporting.

It’s very difficult to figure out what happened from what the journalist wrote. It would make sense if Cho only had one bullet and could only shoot either Waleed or the other student. Maybe the editor cut out some of the relevant detail to save space.

I don’t understand the headline. How was what Waleed did linked to being a Muslim, which is the first (and most important?) information the headline writer wants to convey?

When Daniel O’Dell was shot and wounded but saved students by managing to bar the door to keep the shooter from coming back in to the room, does the Scotsman report this as “Christian Saves Fellow Students?”

When the Romanian professor who survived the Holocaust holds the door closed so students can escape out the window, does the Scotsman report this as “Jew Saves Students?”

Anyway, much condolences and sympathy to the family of Waleed for their terrible loss.

I’m sorry, I meant to refer to “SkyNews” not “the Scotsman”. I thought it was from the newspaper of that name until I just saw it again.

I'm with you.

Personally, I do not consider islam a religion.  That being said, there are people in this world who are heroic and good, and follow the "religion" of islam.

This story, as described in this article, does not describe one of them.

I read another article that was related to the VT shooting and the girl wished to remain anonymous. Asking the question says a lot about your common sense and perhaps intellect.

He saved a life, the fact that he's a Muslim doesn't make him any less of a hero.

Agreed, but I'm not exactly sure what the "hero" did. The article only refers to "Waleed's 'protective movement' that distracted the gunman." Did he twitch, moan in pain, cry out for help, or try to crawl away, or did he really intend to distract Cho to save the lives of others.

Whoa. If there is ever a holocaust against innocent Muslim people here we can name you as one of the founding members fo the death squads. You’ve become as nutty as the enemy.

Interesting post. I just posted something to the hate filled Dallas about the next Holocaust. Blind hatred is dangerous. Even more interesting is that the Islamic fascists who are our enemy think the same way.

He saved a life, the fact that he's a Muslim doesn't make him any less of a hero. I don't understand why you can't look past your prejudice and see that.

What would be the fun in that? I've no doubt that if all 32 of Cho's victims had been Muslims there would be people around here saying he wasn't such a bad guy after all.

Mr. Waleed is a hero, and the sad fact is that we'll probably know what other heroes there were at VT that day.

Substitute “hispanic”, “african-american”, “Catholic”, “Baptist”, or any other race or creed and the story doesnt make the news. I dont think this guy’s religion makes a bit of difference.

In any event, the whole thing is sick.

I just don’t believe this story. I think the wounded kid saw the gunman and just moved in reaction. Some people play possum. I assume he just startled, moved and made the murderer saw that and finished him off. The kid who was saved just saw the movement of the other kid and since he came through alive assumed an intent on the part of the wounded kid who was killed.

There are no facts in this story and we don’t know the e-mail. If the Muslim student waved his arms and yelled, “hey, over here” or something, then I am wrong and indeed he is a hero for trying and succeeding in calling attention to himself and away from others. Without knowing such details, it is just a stretch for me to believe a wounded kid would intentionally create a diversion knowing he would sacrifice his life for the others - especially in light of what I said in that he could NOT know that the murderer would not just step over his lifeless body and kill everyone else after the fact.

Absent other facts, I don’t believe the Muslim student tried to be a hero. I believe the student who survived is reading way too much into the other student’s action and the media - desperate for ANY story that praises Muslims - ran with his opinion.

Spot on. This is thin fantasy. I'm surprise so many posters took it seriously.
