Muslim student gives life to save others in V Tech killings
Sky News ^ | Friday 20th April 2007 | Sky News

Posted on 04/20/2007 11:58:21 PM PDT by the scotsman

A survivor of the Virginia Tech massacre has been describing how a colleague died to protect others. Although badly injured, graduate student Waleed Shalaan distracted gunman Cho Seung-Hui to save another person from his bullets.

Waleed saved another student's life. The surviving student, who wishes to remain anonymous, told of Waleed's heroics through an email to his supervisor.

He describes how he was left uninjured after Cho's initial round of shots.

Meanwhile, Waleed had been wounded but was still alive.

However, when Cho later returned to the classroom to inspect for signs of life among his victims, the surviving student struggled to remain calm.

He believes he would have been shot dead were it not for Waleed's "protective movement" that distracted the gunman.

Cho turned and shot Waleed for a second time, killing him, before leaving the classroom.

Randy Dymond, a civil engineering professor, has said the student asked to him to tell the tale "so that the family of Waleed understands the sacrifice."

Shaalan's mother broke down when she heard Mr Dymond's account.

"He was trying to save someone else," she said repeatedly.

Dymond said Shaalan's body was taken to a Blacksburg mosque so classmates, teachers and friends could say goodbye before he was sent to Egypt for burial.'

Islam isn’t a “race.”

No, but they're in a race. A race to take over the world. ;)

You’re on to something, mimaw. There are a lot of freepers who seem to be saying we’re supposed to despise anyone who is a Muslim. I wonder why they dislike Saddam, since his mass graves are filled with Muslims. Saddam killed Muslims - and we went to Iraq, in part, to liberate his subjects fromn his tyranny. But most of those subjects are Muslims - and now we’re told we’re supposed to hate all Muslims. Sorry if I’m getting a headache, but this is confusing! Blind hatred and hypocrisy often is!

[...What is your final solution for the race?...]

Now that is a wonderful question.

I pray from the bottom of my heart that the people of
Islam would come to know the peace that passes all
understanding through knowing and accepting the Lord,
Jesus Christ as their Savior.

The cross IS the only solution for humanity.

Because the person telling the story wanted the focus to be on the hero student, not on himself.

HERO

Exactly.

What an example of selflessness and love.

Please note that my post #186 said “certain” Muslims... not ALL Muslims.

We didn't go into Iraq to "liberate Iraqis from tyranny"; we went in because we deemed Saddam's regime to be a threat to our national security. Period.

And, now that we have to either get Iraq on our side or bug out and give Iraq's vital strategic location and it's oil wealth to Islamist nutjobs, we can either define the strategic goal as a winnable and noble one:

"Creating and supporting a Muslim state along the lines of Turkey that actively fights against Islamist extremism and has been doing so since the days of Ataturk."

or we can can set ourselves an unwinnable strategic goal right out of the days of Cromwell or the Spanish Inquisition:

"Fighting a religious war against over 1.61 billion people around the World, regardless of their degree of religious sectarianism and religious fervor, based solely on what their religious label is."

“Waleed “stirred” and anonymous interprets that as a “protective movement”.”

Curious ... where did the “stirred” term come from ?

I believe the account of the Holocaust survivor was out within 12 hours of the rampage. I read that some parents of children who were killed were not notified until 10 or 11 o'clock that night.

If one is going to be super critical one might question how the history of the Jewish professor and the story of his courage as well as the fate of his class was so available given the dearth of information during the immediate aftermath of the massacre.

We as a society are all too often willing to accept what we want to believe and label as lies those facts that don't conform to our wished for world view.

“Stirred” is my word and another way to say “movement”.

Ya know, far be it for me to criticize, but throwing around the phrase “Final Solution” is a lazy way of debating, and quite frankly, you’ve lost. Godwin’s Law in action.

"Fighting a religious war against over 1.61 billion people around the World, regardless of their degree of religious sectarianism and religious fervor, based solely on what their religious label"

I don't know where you got that quote, but it's a good one. There seem to be a lot of freepers who want us to fight all Muslims. It's insane. The U.S. has never declared war against a religion - and declaring war against a religion with billions of followers would be insanity.

[...a lot of freepers want us to fight all Muslims...]

I disagree. The terms for our enemies used on Free
Republic and by our President are more likely to be
“Islamo-fascists”, “terrorists” and “Al Quaeda”.

I haven’t heard anyone say we should kill ALL Muslims.

I just wrote it. I put it in quotes to separate the different parts of the concept since I have long since forgotten how my 10th Grade English teacher might have wanted to to organize such a complex sentence. :-)
