Another GOP congressman steps aside after FBI search

WASHINGTON — U.S. Rep. Rick Renzi, R-Ariz., is temporarily stepping down from the House Intelligence Committee amid an ongoing federal investigation.

In October, Justice Department officials confirmed that Renzi was the subject of an inquiry into a 2005 land swap that would benefit a friend and business associate.

Renzi has denied any wrongdoing.

In a statement issued Thursday from Washington, Renzi said, "The FBI came to my family's business to obtain documents related to their investigation.

"I view these actions as the first step in bringing out the truth. Until this matter is resolved, I will take a leave of absence from the House Intelligence Committee. I intend to fully cooperate with this investigation."

Renzi, elected to his third term last November, did not elaborate on the federal probe.

The Arizona Republic reported that FBI agents raided an insurance agency owned by Renzi's wife in Sonoita, a town near Sierra Vista.

Renzi referred all questions to his Washington-based attorney, Laura Miller, who did not immediately return calls Thursday night.

Thursday, U.S. Rep. John Doolittle, R-Calif., surrendered his seat on the House Appropriations Committee after the FBI raided his Virginia home.

What about Harrry Reid’s land swap and Barak Obama?

What about Jefferson?

For the past 19 months, Jefferson, 59, has been the subject of a wide-ranging investigation into allegations that he took bribes from a company seeking lucrative contracts in the Nigerian telecommunications market. He has not been charged with any crime and denies any wrongdoing. Two associates have pleaded guilty.

I don't get it. They confiscated the money...

Exactly. Why do Repubs “step aside” while corrupt Dems stay?

> What about Harrry Reid’s land swap and Barak Obama?

Silly.

Laws don’t apply to Democrats, or the Left in general.

Haven’t you been paying attention?

The Left is exempt.

They can spew hateful language, incite riots, burn neighborhoods, give aid and comfort to our enemies, spit on our best and bravest, cause the deaths of tens of thousands, even millions, ALL WITHOUT ANY CONSEQUENCE WHATSOEVER!!

They don’t even get bad press for all this!!!!!!

I thought he represented the Flagstaff area and his wife runs a biz in southern AZ? Okay, just seems like a distance in which to travel.

My thoughts exactly. There needs to be an oversight committee hearing about laxity in the Justice Dept. in equally looking into possible unlawful/unethical
goings on—I guess that will come with flying pigs. Meantime, a weak justice continues to screw Repubs and let the Dems off.

I am about ready for Gonzales to resign—because he seems to be clueless, not because of any wrong doing in firing the 8 US attorneys.

I'm with you on Gonzales. We need someone strong in the AG position to kick some butt.

Why do Repubs “step aside”

Renzi stepped aside because his committee has FBI oversight, and the FBI is investigating him. In the service, it's called command influence.

This was posted earlier, different source, and is only part of the story. Renzi walked away from the land swap deal - he didn't see it through - probably because he realized it was headed down a path he didn't want to follow.

Republicans filing briefs to back Jefferson in court
Pelosi and some other Democrats silent in fight against FBI raid

Rep. William Jefferson, D-La., the target of a two-year public-corruption investigation, is finding himself with strange bedfellows.

Newt Gingrich, R-Ga., a former House speaker; Robert Michel, R-Ill., a former House minority leader; and Scott Palmer, the former chief of staff for Rep. Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., are among those who have filed friend-of-the-court briefs in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, backing Jefferson's argument that the FBI raid on his office last May was unconstitutional.

...

Federal prosecutors filed briefs Friday urging the appeals court to uphold the constitutionality of the search. U.S. District Judge Thomas Hogan ruled in July that the FBI had "demonstrated a compelling need to conduct the search," and the appeals court will hear oral arguments May 15 on the matter.

Looks like Bush and Gonzales missed a few more RAT Attorneys in GOP clothing.

Good for him. I wish more congressmen were more vigiliant.

John Doolittle needs to get this matter cleared up soon. He only won 49%-45% against a moonbat Dem in a strongly Republican-leaning district last time because of the Abramoff mess.

As am I. He's allowing the BP Agents to rot in jail - HE should do some investigating of his own - like into Johnny Sutton. I definitely want him gone.
