Alec Baldwin apologizes after fiery rant at daughter, 11 [breaks silence]

Alec Baldwin issued an apology on Friday for unleashing a volcanic tirade at his 11-year-old daughter and blamed "certain people" for leaking the rant to US media.

The Oscar-nominated star of "The Departed" branded daughter Ireland a "rude, thoughtless, little pig" in a fiery voicemail message that emerged on celebrity websites on Thursday.

It is the latest twist to the bitter legal wrangling between Baldwin and ex-wife Kim Basinger over custody and visitation rights relating to Ireland. The couple split in 2001.

Baldwin's tirade was apparently triggered by Ireland's failure to switch her mobile phone on for a scheduled call with her father.

"Once again I've made an ass out of myself trying to get to a phone at a specific time," Baldwin says in the message. "I'm tired of playing this game with you. You have insulted me for the last time.

I definately don’t like Baldwin, I know he’s a leftist, but this was a setup by his ex wife. Typically a divorced father finds it very difficult to see his child/children because the ex wife makes it hard. I can understand his frustration and anger, which was really for his ex. Yes, he went over the “line” and shouldn’t have taken it out on the child, but I’ve heard a lot worse than Baldwin’s rant.

Any mom worth her salt would NOT have released that to the media. That will have a lasting impact on her daughter publicly. What girl would want her father saying those things about her, much less his words being made into a media spectacle.

Mom could have taken her recording straight to her lawyer and handled it privately.

If you ask me; what the mom did, using a hurtful thing in her daughter’s life as a pawn agains the dad, is as bad or worse than what dad did in a fit of anger.

Anyone who has kids knows a parent can lose their temper and say stupid, hurtful things.

Do what Doctor!? NO! A jerk acts the way Baldwin does. A loving father can't possibly say those things to his daughter, but if he does he should suffer for it. If Kim or her daughter's actions remove this malignant cyst of a creature from their lives then I will applaud them. If the vile wretch is ruined by it, my prayers will have been answered.

I’m sorry, and I am not a big Alex Baldwin fan but if he didn’t care about his daughter, then he wouldn’t even bother...

Let me get you upsidedown thinking straight. If he didn't care about his daughter, then he wouldn't have called and verbally abused his daughter in the most disgusting and threatening way? Is that really how you see it? You're as sick as he is. Wow, you even give him credit for not molesting her! You and the boob idiot Alec, are sick-o's.

In the course of my graduate work on U.S. law vs. marriage

I agree with your recommendation. If you are not already aware of the work of an attorney named Andrew Vachss I highly recommend his lectures/writing regarding child abuse (you might want to Google him). He is an interesting ‘character’ but has ‘nailed’ the issue more completely than almost anyone, and this includes the wide-ranging work in the mental health industry.

It depends. PLAYFULLY is the key word here. Teasing them directly is fine and we do that all the time in our family. But teasing them about something they are sensitive about in public to get laughs from their friends or an audience is something completely different.

AND doing things that are embarrassing because of how YOU are acting is another thing all together. I have very vivid pictures of my father doing Dick Van Dyke style dancing behind the shopping card every time we went to the grocery store. I loved that...even as I was looking around furtively to make sure none of my friends might see. You have to understand. My dad is kind of weird. ;-)

Colossians 3:21
Fathers, do not provoke or irritate or fret your children [do not be hard on them or harass them], lest they become discouraged and sullen and morose and feel inferior and frustrated. [Do not break their spirit.]

I disagree with you on that one. I don't know how much you actually know about Baldwin since you say you aren't a fan, but if you ever look up his stint in the reality show The Biggest Loser, then you might have more sympathy for his daughter and Bassinger. That man is rip-roaring crazy and mean.

Sometimes it's all about the power trip for one parent and not about caring for the child. I more than often have a lot of sympathy for men in custody suits, but in this case from what I've seen of his character, I have to believe that Bassinger is only protecting her daughter and I pray for the child that Bassinger isn't as crazy as Baldwin makes her out to be.

You mean kissing your kid in public and crying daddy loves his little baby, isn’t right.....I always thought he was joking when he told me I was weird.

I’m just holding on to the naked baby pictures, first girlfriend and the true revenge I shall have for all the sleepness nights.

I must be a bad parent.

One other comment on this and then I’ll let it go.

There is a significant difference between teasing and embarrassing and humiliation.

A subtle difference, but in the context of this conversation I believe a crucial one.

So, they split in 2001 and the custody battle is still raging? How much money have their lawyers made? And can't the judge just say "this is how it's going to be, get out of my court and get on with your lives."

See post 167.

I agree. But I don’t agree releasing the tapes “equals” Baldwin’s verbal violence.

Perhaps Mom felt at last she found a club large enough to keep this attack dad away from her child.

A lesser of two evils.

I agree Jo.

Do we know for sure that mom or her lawyer released it?

Newsflash - they’re both wrapped up in themselves. That’s why daddy left the message and that’s why mommy plastered it all over the media. It’s not about Ireland, it’s all about ego and control. Alec has anger issues, immaturity and poor judgment (among other things). Kim is by no means blameless either, although that’s how she’s trying to play the scene. IMHO, Kim has shown herself to be manipulative, narcissistic and does not have the child’s best interests at heart. This war is between the two protaganists, Alec and Kim, and Ireland is just the measuring stick of who's "winning".

What would be no big deal for an adult or even a teenage boy could be devastatingly mortifying for an 11 year old girl.

Thank you for explaining what he said about her on Letterman. It does sound like he is insensitive to how she might feel about his crude jokes.
