Islamabad, 19 April (AKI) - Thousands of people rallied in several Pakistani cities on Thursday to protest against what they refer to as the 'terrorism' of citizens by members linked to a radical mosque in the capital Islamabad. Reports say that the protestors, which included women's groups and human rights organisations chanted anti-extremism slogans and called for government action against the administration of the Lal Masjid or Red Mosque who have called for a Taliban-style law to be enforced in Islamabad.
Protestors in the capital reportedly marched to Pakistan's parliament building and presidential palace and similar protests also took place in Lahore, Karachi and Peshawar.
The main cleric of the Lal Masjid, Abdul Aziz, had announced that a Taliban-style Islamic or Sharia court would be set up to curb "vulgar" activities. He gave the government a month to close video shops and brothels, or risk that the movement in the radical mosque and its affiliated Muslim seminary of madrassa, take matters into their own hands, even carrying out suicide attacks.
Reports say that the protestors on Thursday rejected a conciliatory approach toward the radical clerics and students.
On Sunday, tens of thousands of people had gathered in the southern port city of Karachi against the radical mosque. That rally was organised by the pro-government Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) against what it called the threat of "Kalashnikov Sharia" of the Lal Masjid clerics.
About time. Ried and Nancy will be saddened by the news.
Now that is more good news, Valin, that is in line with Pipe’s article and the Rand study. Thanks very much for posting.
HORRAY FOR ME!!!! :-)
all the radical moslem clerics , worldwide, should be hunted down and shot. Every one .
Excellent news! Let me guess: The women’s groups did NOT include N.O.W.
Yes sir!
It’s like watching a chess match (slow), then switching to a tennis match (faster), then a ping-pong match (the pace accelerates)...but as you know, “History takes time. It is not an instant thing.”
Trickle down annihilation works!
As time goes on...they will. Actually I think they’ll end up more the KKK in America, they’re still around but (severely) marginalized.
good stuff bump
