The pundits seem to agree: George W. Bush is toast, kaput. So how come the president's holding steady, even rising, in the polls? And what does that mean for 2008?
Let's consider the weight of the punditical pile-on: Joe Klein, writing in Time magazine, sees "An Epic Collapse" - specifically, the Iraq war, the Walter Reed hospital mess, the flap over the fired U.S. attorneys. Concludes Klein: "It is increasingly difficult to imagine yet another two years of slow bleed with a leader so clearly unfit to lead."
David Ignatius, writing in The Washington Post, opines, "Simply put, the White House is losing its ability to shape events." And Georgie Anne Geyer, appearing in The Chicago Tribune, gets personal: "George W. is the man who isn't there this spring in Washington. ... It is becoming increasingly clear that no one pays attention to the Texan with the destructive ambitions anymore . . ."
So here's a question: If Bush is falling apart so dramatically that he is in danger of simply vanishing, how come he's hanging in there in the polls?
But don't take my word for it. According to pollingreport.com, a nonpartisan compendium of polls, Bush's average approval rating for April 2007 is 34.6. And what was his approval exactly a year ago, for all of April 2006? It was 35.6. Neither number is impressive, but what's clear is that Bush is hanging in there, approval-wise - no "epic collapse."
So what gives? The answer would seem to be that Bush is not being evaluated in isolation: Instead, in the public mind, he is being compared and contrasted to the rest of Washington, D.C. - specifically, the Democrats who now control Congress.

Answer: The Harry Reids of the world keep spewing treasonous bile out of their pieholes.
I agree with his thoughts mostly. But where in the world did he get this?? Centrist??
I hope his numbers rise before the ‘08 election.
I don’t think this tells the half of it.
Congress and the Media are unable to muster superior polls to Bush.
When you honestly evaluate dem and indep oversampling, Bush is doing pretty well. All of his recent polls are trending upward.
Fair analysis would ask who is more popular and able to affect the world?
No one.
Bush is in charge and that is precisely why so many are galvanized against him.
He is not running for re election so he is even more dangerous to his enemies.
His ratings would increase if he produced some better results for the conservatives. The economy and stock markets are in good shape so what we are left with is:
1) Immigration
2) Iraq
3) Bending over for the dems.
Do something the get those going in the right direction and the numbers would increase.
While the masses still get their ‘news’ from the MSN , there may be a tendency for some intellectually honest ones to go to Talk Radio, the Net, and blogs that spend a lot of time on analysing many topics. The left wing blogs are so kooky that not many of the masses really believe their slop. And then there are the Dems. The 100 days produced absolutely no legislation for memory. The Dems are just haters who spew negative malarky and though it seems to have dropped the numbers on support of the war against Islamofascism, it still has not defeated the Prez. One wonders just how much pacifist socialist evil that the Dems spout affect our military. I really would love to hear from the military on this unending Quisling surrender stuff from the Dems and what it does to morale.
If a sitting Republican President can not hold 34% then he should drown himself in his own piss.
Well, THIS member of the military gets momentarily irate, but then steels herself and renews her resolve to utterly ignore these morons.
Free Republic and other similar sites have made it abundantly clear that these idiots speak for themselves and a minor collection of crazies, not the majority of Americans.
I have more trouble with the wimpy Republicans than I do with Dummies.
The Washington Post, “centrist”? What planet is he on?
Pelosi and her morally-bankrupt Liberal cohorts are in the toilet bowl in the polls as well.
We will not falter and we will not fail. Some will dance with him that brung us.
According to our own DrDeb .. I believe Rasmussen was over-weighting their poll with 12% more dems than repubs - which is way out of line with reality.
This is how they keep the President’s numbers so low.
Cute huh ..??
Thank you...
And don’t hire anyone associated with La Raza.
I thought Rasmussen was supposed to be one of the trustworthy ones.
Source?
Thanks!
The difficulty level in leading becomes very high when you have the top democrat leader actually committing crimes to undermine the US (Logan act), and you have the 2nd highest democrat leader committing treason and actively trying to prop up terrorist morale in Iraq.
Maybe because the American voting public doesn’t contain as high a percentage of anti-American RAT traitors as the MSM?
I think Bush needs to a better job communicating with the voters. Almost 90% of Americans were in favor of the invasion. He should remind those 90% that they have a moral obligation to support the US staying in Iraq, no matter how long it takes and no matter how much it costs, until they can leave knowing the country is at peace, the constitution is fair, and human rights are being respected.
Bush has amazing moral clarity. I don’t know why he isn’t out there making this argument, going city by city and pounding away at the theme. Heck, the RNC should be running commercials: “Don’t be immoral! If you supported the war you’re obligated to keep paying for it even if we have to commit 165,000 troops and spend a hundred billion a year for the next hundred years”.
Gotta go for the values voters.

Yep.
God bless your service. You are point on. If only the MSM would understand that we are in a generational war against Islamofascism and that the Dems are actually supporting our enemies, it would mean a huge culture shift in the nation. Unfortunately , the masses still get their news and lies from NBC,CBS,ABC and the Clinton News Network. Blessings to you and yours.
