WASHINGTON // Federal investigators are probing whether Chinese producers laced a key ingredient in pet food with an industrial chemical in order to boost the price of their shipments
snip
Referring to the contamination that has prompted the recall of more than 100 brands of pet food, investigators are trying to determine whether Chinese producers purposely added melamine to their wheat gluten shipments to Menu Foods.

“Every nation in the WTO has to grant MFN to all the others. China joined the WTO in 2001.”
Time to kick them out.
Breeders Choice and its family of brands AvoDerm Natural, Pinnacle®, Active Care®, Advanced Pet Diets®, and Health Food for Dogs® are NOT involved in any recall. We do not use wheat gluten, rice gluten, or rice protein concentrate in any of our dry or canned dog and cat foods. All ingredients in our foods are from certified sources within the United States, with the exception of the Premium New Zealand Lamb and 3 oz. canned cat foods. We have been making high quality natural pet food in our plant for sixty years.

Maybe, if we dropped the farm subsidies, the dog food producers wouldn’t have to buy grain products from China.
Any idea of how many pets have died from this?
Who gives a *&! about the pets!
If they are cheating with ingredients destined for pet food, you can bet your A$$ they are cheating on human food too! The whole point is that they are ripping us off and there’s no knowing how long they’ve been doing it. As far as I’m concerned the &%*ing pets are expendable. THIS COULD HAVE EASILY BEEN PEOPLE DROPPING LIKE FLIES.
I want their heads on a platter! We put up with embargos on american beef because of that stupid cow disease that was never even proven...and that was not even on purpose. Now we got PROOF that the dam *&%$ are poisoning ingredients on purpose!
It’s time for a total ban on all chinese ag products.
Is there any pet food left that’s safe? Are the Chinese so ignorant that they would lace this product with a harmful substance soley to boost prices?
Did you go to the Pet Connection site to report this? It is really important that every singe dog affected by this be reported... also to save any food you were feeding, just in case.
I don’t think we should pay anyone in this country NOT to grow crops.
If they thought they could get away with it.... probably.
Goodness, I hate to even think about what that number might be. Arizona Carolyn can point you to a website called The Pet Connection. I think thee has been a lot of discussion on the numbers there.
The farm subsidy system is insane, but I haven’t heard one word about it in relation to the poison dog food.
Thanks for the link.
That’s by far the most inclusive and easiest to use that I’ve seen.
4,396 as of today, 4/19/2007 (reported deaths)
Wasn’t it the democratic party that started the farm subsidy program?
After I posted, there was additional info posted. It would be easy enough to cut China out of the picture by allowing farmers to produce our own crops. Heck, start shrimp tanks and fisheries. We don’t need their stinkin’ seafood!
“Nitrogen levels are measured to calculate the protein content, which determines the value of a shipment
But FDA Commissioner Andrew C. von Eschenbach told the senator that investigators haven’t been able to make the trip because they cannot get visas from the Chinese government.”
WOW! Our politicians got us in quite a mess with this trade with China, and I’ve read it’s a $200 BILLION imbalance.
Katie says, “Nuke em.”
I'm getting a funny feeling about this...
NO cheers, unfortunately.
The PRC is a disgusting totalitarian state that has now poisoned a large number of our animals, and potentially our citizens.
Now they are compounding their already atrocious behavior in this case by denying our FDA investigators even the common courtesy of simple entry visas.
Let them rot in their own poisoned system. We certainly don't need any more food items from Red China, no matter how inexpensively they are priced.
I used to feed my dogs Science Diete, but after doing some research found out that it is crap. It was OK until P&G bout them out and redid all of the formulas to save money. Any dog food that uses corn is not the way to go.
I am now using Innova Evo. Do a little research and let me know your thoughts if you have the time.
