McCain heckled over gun rights stance
CNN ^ | April 19, 2007

Sen. John McCain was heckled Wednesday night by a South Carolina town hall audience member when he reiterated his support for gun rights in the wake of the Virginia Tech shootings.

The Arizona Republican, who was asked to state his views on gun rights in light of the tragedy, said, "Our hearts go out to all of the victims and their families in that terrible tragedy and that crazy person. Words are not, I don't have a large enough vocabulary to express how saddening and terrible this tragedy is. So I won't try any further except they know that all Americans prayers are with them as they go through this terrible trauma. I do not believe that we should tamper with the Second Amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America."

As the crowd applauded, a woman immediately yelled, "Do you think George Washington stood for automatic weapons?"

McCain responded, "I think that George Washington stood for the right to bear arms which is their constitutional right."

Overwhelming as they’d have been against British musketry, Washington would have given his right arm for them.

"Do you think George Washington stood for automatic weapons?"

I'm sure GW would have loved if some of his militiamen had a couple M2 50 cal, or even an AR-15 to face the Redcoats.

"Do you think George Washington stood for automatic weapons?"

If you read the Federalist Papers and other documents recording the drafting of our Constitution I think you will come to the conclusion that our Founding Fathers intended us to have those arms necessary to ensure the people could defend freedom against the encroachments of a Federal government and a standing army. I don't think single shot anything will fulfill that purpose.

I think the answer to the "ladies" question is a resounding "Yes"

Washington would know and appreciate the value of an automatic weapon in the hands of a Patriot, when the government monopoly got too big for its britches.

One woman yelled and CNN reports McCain heckled. Should have reported the crowd applauded.

One South Carolinian makes an anti-gun remark to McCain and CNN has a royal chubby over it and flaunts it on the air and in print, like it was the way the people in the state actually feels.

Bull Flop.

I’ll bet old George would have loved to have a few automatic weapons back when he was facing the “Red Coats”.

Do you think George Washington stood for automatic weapons?

He understood the 2nd Amendment (as did pretty much everyone at that time) to apply to the private ownership of any arms, including cannons, warships, etc. I think George would have been quite happy to see automatic weapons in the hands of any upstanding private citizen.

Idiot: Do you think George Washington stood for automatic weapons?

Presidential Candidate CheyennePress: So I take it you would have been opposed to General Washington arming the militias and the US military with automatic weapons if he had them at his disposal against the British? That’s fair enough, though not the keenest strategy, I’d imagine. Moving along...
