WASHINGTON, April 18 Former Senator Fred D. Thompson of Tennessee is not a declared presidential candidate, but he demonstrated his political star power Wednesday by drawing an audience of dozens of House Republicans searching for an alternative to their partys current presidential field...
Those who met with Mr. Thompson... said... he... promised an unconventional candidacy should he become a contender.
Many of those on hand were eager to see him start campaigning as a more conservative, palatable alternative to the current crop of Republican candidates, and one who could have wide appeal in Southern states...
As they left the session, lawmaker after lawmaker voiced frustration with the current presidential contenders and said the strong interest in Mr. Thompson illustrated a hunger for an alternative to the leading candidates, former Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts; former Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani of New York and Senator John McCain of Arizona. Each is seen by some party members to have some liabilities that limit his electability.
Mr. Wamp said five of the seven members of the partys House leadership attended the meeting.
I think we are still looking, and probably looking for someone who is not out there yet, said Representative Jo Bonner, Republican of Alabama. We want Ronald Reagan, and we know Ronald Reagan is not going to be our nominee.
The House members do see a bit of Reagan in Mr. Thompson, both for his conservative record and an acting career in which he has often played the commanding authority figure, a fact they said should not be overlooked in assessing his appeal...
Republicans who met with Mr. Thompson came from the crucial primary states of Iowa and South Carolina and from Southern strongholds like Florida, Texas, Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee.

The party of Obama has no room to talk.
Fred Bump.

Fred Heads Unite, man...
Fred Ping!
“Seven weeks ago, I would have put it very low, Senator Bob Corker, Republican of Tennessee, said of the odds of a Thompson bid. “Four weeks ago, when I talked on the phone to both he and his wife, I would have put it at 50-50.
Last Wednesday, I talked to them both again on the phone, and I have to tell you I think he is very interested. I think he is at the 75- to 80-percent level at this point. I really do.”
If you'd like to be a FRedHead let me or Howlin know.
CAUTION: This is a very high volume ping list. You may receive between 5 and 10 pings a day. If you'd rather not receive so many pings, let me know and I'll only ping you once a week.
It’s already an unconventional candidacy. :)
Bwhahahaha!
BikiniBarry?
BUMP!
Bumpity Bump Bump.....Go Fred!
If the other GOP presidential contenders were smart, they’d latch onto Fred and offer any assistance during his campaign to parlay into a job in the administration. Hunter could be Sec of Defense. Tancredo, Homeland Security. Even Rudy could be Attorney General and Mitt Romney maybe Treasury Secretary or an economic advisor or something. Because once Thompson declares, all of the other contenders might as well take a dump and hang it up. The grassroots have clearly spoken here.
You sound somewhat excited. :)
LOL
I want a candidate I can feel GOOD about supporting. Oregon is SO damned Liberal, and the abuse you take for being both Conservative and VOCAL in support of a Conservative candidate is REALLY out of hand. I me REALLY out of hand. I am not gonna do that sort of thing for someone I am not really really behind! Its too abusive and costly on a personal level. For a candidate I really support, like Fred, HELL YA! Then its FUN! Then I ENJOY getting all these freaks frothing at the mouth instead of fearing for my safety!
He may be our best bet.
I would say, if the other conservatives in the race continue to diddle around at 2-3% each, they do their duty, and get out, making way for this guy, whom we can all coalesce behind—if of course he were pulling strong double digits. Gotta knock out Giuliani, McCain and other mods first.
Thompson can’t declare until next month. Maybe he should wait until June or July. He’s the elephant in the room. For both parties. Scare them with uncertainty and use it to your advantage. The NYT is scared about the unknown. You can tell.
They really all need to have a powow at some time in early next year and work things out--and back the top dog from the conservative wing. I am not suggesting "anti-trust" here, but some way the GOP conservative vote can not be allowed to split so that we get a moderate who carries out big government policies, like we got the last time.
