The chemical, melamine, is believed to have contaminated rice protein concentrate used to make a variety of Natural Balance Pet Foods products for both dogs and cats, the Food and Drug Administration said Wednesday.
Previously, the chemical was found to contaminate wheat gluten used by at least six other pet food and treat manufacturers.
Both ingredients were imported from China, though by different companies and from different manufacturers.
A lawmaker said Wednesday the Chinese have refused to grant visas to FDA inspectors seeking to visit the plants where the ingredients were made. An FDA spokesman later said the visas were not refused but that the agency had not received the necessary invitation letter to get visas.
"It troubles me greatly the Chinese are making it more difficult to understand what led to this pet food crisis," Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., told The Associated Press after meeting with the FDA commissioner, Dr. Andrew von Eschenbach.
A message left Wednesday with the Chinese Embassy in Washington was not immediately returned.

My son’s family lost their Mama cat all of a sudden and they tried to hand and bottle feed the kittens but they died too. They only ate dry cat food and it isn’t in the recall but the same brand of wet foods is in the recall. I’m pretty suspicious. They had 6 cats and now they only have one.
The next time my Wife gives me the stink-eye for sneaking a tidbit from my plate to the dog, I’ll just say I’m trying to save his life, that dog food could kill him.
You’re welcome... that is good to hear... I received a very nasty email telling me I hijacked this thread, for that I appologize. I become very passionate about what we feed our pets.
That is scary... about the organic food... thanks for telling me. Where in the heck is the FDA? Oh, I just remembered, trying to take away vitamins and herbs unless prescribed by doctors for big $$$.. perhaps if they controlled the people growing the food we wouldn’t need supplements.
A lot of people feed chicken necks, backs, wings, etc., along with some organ meats and pureed vegetables. I started that way. Now I don't feed any chicken, I purchase everything from a family farm in Pennsylvania called Hare-today -- they have a website... for people just starting out Natures' Variety and Natures logic both makes a prepared raw you can feed -- comes in one-ounce cubes and you feed 2 - 3% of what the dogs SHOULD weight each day -- watch them slim down. You can find both brands and a few more raw brands at onlynaturalpets.com...
If you are interested in the cocker list email me and I'll give you the link. BTW, how old is your cockers?
It was our groomers yorkie, but it was sad, she was so sweet.
Check out onlynaturalpets.com for different brands of already prepared raw you could start there.. lots of yorkies eat a raw diet..
Don’t buy any FOOD made in China.... but of course you have no way of knowing what processed ingredients in your processed food came from where....
Its only a matter of time before people die from some of this stuff, and not pets.
Yay free trade, your health and safety are second fiddle to selling out your kids fiscal well being.
I’ll remember that next time I need a vet visit for one of my girls... I’m so glad you told me.
I’m sorry this came out wrong, it was the yorkie that belonged to the groomer of our three cockers... I think she should sue, too.....
Oh good grief. Some people can't stop wetting the bed. Because of you, my little doggies are having their home cooked meal. THANK YOU for all your help/advice/links!
Would you happen to have any thoughts on how to transition a 12 year old beagle and 11 year old border collie mix from dry food to something more safe and suitable?
:)
Good one!!
Your dog will ove you more too!!!
I don’t have an issue with free trade though. My issue is with careless making of ingredients and killing pets. Later it may as you say, escalate to human food.
If you have no issues with free trade, you aren’t paying attention. Free trade is what allows nations who don’t have remotely the regulatory laws or enforcement that keep you safe in the US to ship their stuff here.
Its only a matter of time before a human being dies from this sort of thing.. whether by accident, or by a jihadist figuring out its easier to contaminate wheat gluten in a plant in China or on a boat crossing the ocean to be put in Chef Boyardee in america than it is to contaminate it in the plant that will finally package it and ship it to your store where you will happily put it front of your child to eat.
Free trade is the biggest scam ever perpetrated on America, bar none.
Stop it already!
Free trade is fine. China has issues with an arbitrary rule of law and lacking safe checks we expect. Other countries we trade with DO have this in place.

The U.S. will NEVER be 100% safe - either from terrorist, home grown murdering LEFTISTS etc.. I don’t want to live in a lock down world. You take your chances and when your number is up, IT’S UP! That is beyond my control. However I’m not going to intentionally kill myself either. BTW, we don't eat Chef Boyardee. We buy fresh meat NOT from China as well as fresh fish, vegetable and fruit - NOT FROM CHINA. I don't like preservatives and chemicals in my food.

Get out of here!
To be an isolationist is VERY unhealthy.
Get over Buchanan.
There is a small booklet out called Switching to Raw by Sue Johnson. I've seen this booklet praised over and over again.
There is a good solid long-lived list at yahoo called k9nutrition. You can get some good help in switching to either home-cooked or raw.
And a website called Dog Aware run by one of the moderators of k9nutrition. This site is full of up-to-date and accurate information for raw and homecooking dog owners.
Beagles, unless your Beagle is different, are food driven and pretty easy to put on a natural diet. Some of the more finicky breeds take a little more coaxing.
I didn't learn about a lot of this until I lost a dog to cancer about 9 years ago. The research I did into the type of cancer she had led me to a whole different life for my dogs. This is why I'm so passionate on the subject.
I do get carried away on the subject, it’s almost a calling to save as many dogs as possible from the stuff vets and advertising push.... good for your dogs! (and you)...
