Chemical Found in Second Pet Food Ingredient, Recall Expanded

...

The chemical, melamine, is believed to have contaminated rice protein concentrate used to make a variety of Natural Balance Pet Foods products for both dogs and cats, the Food and Drug Administration said Wednesday.

Previously, the chemical was found to contaminate wheat gluten used by at least six other pet food and treat manufacturers.

Both ingredients were imported from China, though by different companies and from different manufacturers.

A lawmaker said Wednesday the Chinese have refused to grant visas to FDA inspectors seeking to visit the plants where the ingredients were made. An FDA spokesman later said the visas were not refused but that the agency had not received the necessary invitation letter to get visas.

"It troubles me greatly the Chinese are making it more difficult to understand what led to this pet food crisis," Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., told The Associated Press after meeting with the FDA commissioner, Dr. Andrew von Eschenbach.

A message left Wednesday with the Chinese Embassy in Washington was not immediately returned.

It’s not too late — I love Papillon’s..... check out sitstay for their grain-free treats and chewies. my dogs love the knuckle bones they sell... I usually make two large treat purchases a year... or onlynaturalpets.com... same thing... Onlynatural has a good selection of natural foods, warning you will spend a lot of time reading on their site... look for a grain-free food, healthy treats and you should have your dog for a long time..

Thanks for the link and the info.... I think. Haven’t checked it out yet but will cautiously move forward. ;-)

BTW, the head of the Pap rescue group also feeds all her dogs raw. Swears by it.

A lady vet testified last week before Durbin's committee that it was pretty stupid that people think they cannot cook for their own pets but can cook for their families.... I was impressed that a vet actually came forward and admitted what many of us know..

That was my vet Carolyn! Dr. Hodgkins is fantastic and doesn't mince words! She has taught me so much about cats but the biggest thing is she got me to change to a raw diet for my four. These guys act like I'm starving them if I just try to feed them canned food!

The sites I gave you both sell raw and at onlynaturalpets they are carrying the entire Natures’ Logic line, including their raw and their shipping is reasonable.... My dogs have all thrived on raw.

I can’t thank you enough. I’ve bookmarked this thread and will sit hubby down to read all this tomorrow. (He’s my biggest problem because he LOVES to hand out little treats for our dogs and cats.) I’ll FORCE him to face reality or die trying!

I’ll even make him read that link you gave me! ;-)

Horrible tragedy this. Loved animals getting sick. I just take solace in the fact that I stockpile and rotate my dogs food same as I do my own. Plus the corner grocery store only stocks 2 brands of dry dog food and my neighbors would tell me if they had probs.

Fancy Feast canned (ground varieties only, no slices or chunks in gravy) and Purina One dry. Haven’t had any problems.

Your Fancy Feast is great but, take it from an owner with two diabetic cats, ditch the dry food. Your Fancy Feast has everything your cat needs (it's not as good as raw but not bad either) and won't cause further illnesses like Feline Diabetes.

For anyone that's interested, here is the web site Dr. Hodgkins (the vet that testified before Durbin against the pet food companies) set up for diabetic cats. It has quite a bit of just plain nutritional info as well...

Dr. Elizabeth Hodgkins YourDiabeticCat.com

This is a great site for cat nutrition and making your own food info too...

I know a guy that feeds his big dog what he eats. Soups, salads, BBQ ribs and chicken. And sandwhiches. And pizza. It likes beer. That dog is so spoiled rotten it tells him what to do and when. And his wife feeds it donuts.

The last time some one tried to give my dog beer I almost punched him (the guy not my dog). I'm a firm beleiver in not giving my dog anything but dog food and hard bones.

I have two cockers and they’re both overweight. What do you mean by ‘raw’? And where do you get it?
