Chemical Found in Second Pet Food Ingredient, Recall Expanded

...

The chemical, melamine, is believed to have contaminated rice protein concentrate used to make a variety of Natural Balance Pet Foods products for both dogs and cats, the Food and Drug Administration said Wednesday.

Previously, the chemical was found to contaminate wheat gluten used by at least six other pet food and treat manufacturers.

Both ingredients were imported from China, though by different companies and from different manufacturers.

A lawmaker said Wednesday the Chinese have refused to grant visas to FDA inspectors seeking to visit the plants where the ingredients were made. An FDA spokesman later said the visas were not refused but that the agency had not received the necessary invitation letter to get visas.

"It troubles me greatly the Chinese are making it more difficult to understand what led to this pet food crisis," Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., told The Associated Press after meeting with the FDA commissioner, Dr. Andrew von Eschenbach.

A message left Wednesday with the Chinese Embassy in Washington was not immediately returned.

The diluted, low sodium chicken broth is a good idea. I will try that! Excellent. (I give my dog some extra too!) : )

fish and sweet potato should be fine... it’s usually the smaller breeds prone to this with the exception of the Doberman, which is badly affected by it.

Some TV station in St. Louis followed a load of Euthanized dogs right into a processing plant a few years ago, got it all on video... I remember someone on one of the dog lists reporting she got a dog tooth in some kibble she fed her dogs and that made a believer out of her.

It does seem to help. Nothing like a pacing, panting hound when you’re trying to sleep at 3:00am. LOL!

Speaking of which, this old gal is going to bed!

Recently I heard somewhere that we shouldn’t buy or use products that are eaten or ingested, sold by the Dollar Stores or in bargain bins at your local market. Also included on the list were plastic toys for toddlers because the plastic contains lead.

Want to bet these other products ALL come from China as well? I have no doubt China would pump pond scum or toilet water into any products they manufacture, just to increase the bulk!

and rawhide chewies..... most come from China or even worse Indonesia and are not real rawhide. These things are pure poison to our dogs...

I know a guy that feeds his big dog what he eats. Soups, salads, BBQ ribs and chicken. And sandwhiches. And pizza. It likes beer. That dog is so spoiled rotten it tells him what to do and when. And his wife feeds it donuts.

I had a cat that lived to be very old, ate mostly ground organs and beef heart and I used to add garlic powder and brewers yeast to her food (before I knew better)... she had the most beautiful coat and was healthy as a horse. Today I wouldn’t give her garlic because of the warnings, but it certainly didn’t hurt her.

Seriously? My husband feeds our dogs those chew sticks every day! Pardon my ignorance, but why are they “pure poison?” Are those chew sticks (Wal Mart) poison too??

cooked BBQ Ribs? Now, that isn’t a good idea. Dogs digest raw bones just fine, but cooked bones is asking for an impaction in the bowels or intestines... plus large bones like that tend to shatter when they are cooked..

yes... I know, my husband used to buy them, too. They are Chinese crap.. the rawhides are whitened with formaldhyde... and you dont' want to know about the stuff from Indonesia.... and greenies -- they are cellulose and will only make the vets rich, there is a lot of photos online of surgeries to removed undigested greenies from intestines...

Go to sitstay.com or onlynaturalpets.com and look for their bully sticks and other tendon chews they have on the site. Alot of the products are Merrick or Nature's Variety.

The Merrick are all make in TExas and the Nature's Variety are all good quality, too. My dogs just each got a tendon chew tonight after dinner -- they were on their tip toes knowing they were going to get them (I had them out on the counter all day as a reminder)... if you want training treats they have great treats on both sites, too.. they love the dehydrated turkey livers.

Oh boy. THANK YOU for the information. We just got a Papillon rescue dog (literally a bitch taken from a puppy mill at age 5), and had to do extensive dental on her a couple of months ago. Many of her teeth were malformed and abscessed. So what do we do?? Of course we charge into the store and stock up on Alpo canned food for her recovery period. I swear, if she gets sick or dies from eating that junk I’ll sue their pants off!

It’s funny how times have changed, we’re so careful about what we feed our dogs.

But when we were growing up (many moons ago), our dog ate what we ate. I don’t think my folks ever bought dog food, LOL.

The dog ate spaghetti, meat loaf, tuna casserole...if we had it for dinner, it’s also what the dog ate.

She was a Manchester Terrier and lived to be about 12, never had any health problems.
