Your immediate help is essential as Planned Parenthood responds to the disastrous U.S. Supreme Court decision issued just hours ago. It's a dark day for women's health and safety.
With Bush appointees John Roberts and Samuel Alito leading the way, a 5-4 majority turned its back on more than 30 years of Supreme Court decisions that protected women's health from dangerous laws that restrict abortion.
In the cases of Gonzales v. Planned Parenthood and Gonzales v. Carhart, the court has now made the Bush abortion ban the law of the land. There is no way we will let this stand. Not when it's an issue so central to women's lives and so crucial to the health care services that Planned Parenthood provides to women every day.

As you read this, Planned Parenthood lawyers and medical experts are carefully studying the justices' opinions, searching out ways to ensure that our patients are provided with the best and safest possible care under this reckless ruling.
Meanwhile teams of organizers and advocates are being dispatched to key states to directly confront anti-choice legislators who are tripping over themselves to make sure that women in their states will be the first to suffer the impact of this dogmatic Supreme Court decision.
We need your immediate financial support to sustain our legal, organizing, and media efforts. With you by our side, Planned Parenthood will lead a massive public expression of outrage over this decision in the days ahead. Please rush an emergency donation in as generous an amount as you can possibly afford. In the aftermath of this decision, every moment counts.

This ruling takes away an important option for doctors who seek the best and safest care for their patients. And it sets a precedent that politicians should make intensely private health care decisions for women and families, when in fact these decisions should be made by a woman in consultation with her doctor.
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the American Nurses Association, and many other medical groups oppose the federal ban. And, until now, every single court that examined the ban struck it down because, among other things, it fails to protect women's health.
Acting quickly and decisively, we have to do what the Supreme Court refused to do. We have to stop politicians from interfering with women's personal medical decisions.

Our opponents are already mobilizing to use this decision as the foundation for a brutal, far-reaching assault on reproductive freedom that would have devastating consequences for women all across America. We must never let them succeed.
Let's get to work.

I sense an uproar from Lady Pelosi soon.
anyone know when kennedy became a “conservative justice”?
“Dont get me wrong Im happy with the decision. Im just concerned that, with this close of a call on what should be an indisputable decision, we cant hope for much more progress on the abortion front.”
Never look down in the mouth at a clear ‘win’ is my view.
Go ahead, suck out the brains, but save the baby seals.
Agreed!
This grotesque procedure is central and crucial to women and PP? They cannot fathom any other method for terminating a pregnancy than to have a full-term fetus take a pair of scissors to the base of the skull and attack the brain? They make is sound like there aren't 40+ other ways to end the viability of a fetus.
Lets let PP know how we feel today. Here is the membership email below. It was the only one I could email a note to other than the media relations person.

Why the drop after 1960? (in deaths of women from illegal abortions)
The reasons were new and better antibiotics, better surgery and the establishment of intensive care units in hospitals. This was in the face of a rising population. Between 1967 and 1970 sixteen states legalized abortion. In most it was limited, only for rape, incest and severe fetal handicap (life of mother was legal in all states). There were two big exceptions California in 1967, and New York in 1970 allowed abortion on demand. Now look at the chart carefully.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Abortion Statistics - Decision to Have an Abortion (U.S.)
· 25.5% of women deciding to have an abortion want to postpone childbearing
· 21.3% of women cannot afford a baby
· 14.1% of women have a relationship issue or their partner does not want a child
· 12.2% of women are too young (their parents or others object to the pregnancy)
· 10.8% of women feel a child will disrupt their education or career
· 7.9% of women want no (more) children
· 3.3% of women have an abortion due to a risk to fetal health
2.8% of women have an abortion due to a risk to maternal health
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So how many womens lives have been saved by abortion?
Only about 3% of abortions since 1972 were reported to be due to a risk to maternal health. A reasonable person would recognize that not all of those cases represent a lethal risk. But lets say they did. That means that nearly 45 million fetuses were butchered to save the lives of about 1.3 million women. Or put another way; 35 babies are killed to save each woman.
Abortion was legal in all 50 states prior to Roe v. Wade in cases of danger to the life of the woman.
Roe v Wade: FULL Text (The Decision that wiped out an entire Generation 33 years ago today)
Well, I consider it a dark day that women think that partial birth abortion is something to be celebrated. Packing their hag bags, indeed.
Another email from Planned Parenthood on this topic....
America Won’t Stand for Abortion Bans!
Put every elected leader in America on notice: we won’t let them use the Supreme Court’s reckless decision to threaten women’s health.
“For the first time since Roe, the Court blesses a prohibition with no exception protecting a woman’s health.”
Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg
Dear xxxxxx,
In the last 24 hours, people all across America have expressed their outrage at a Supreme Court ruling that has brought about a seismic shift on reproductive freedom. The court told women that, with their health at risk during a pregnancy, deciding what to do is no longer up to them and their doctors. The Bush Supreme Court has let politicians come barging into that most personal of decisions.
No woman in America is safe from that intrusion. And women in states where anti-choice legislators are tripping over themselves to take advantage of the court’s unprincipled actions are in the most immediate jeopardy. Send a powerful message right now. Make clear that you won’t let any court or any politician put women’s health and safety at risk.
SIGN OUR PLANNED PARENTHOOD PLEDGE RIGHT NOW!
In her dissenting opinion, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg wrote, “The Court deprives women of the right to make an autonomous choice, even at the expense of their safety.” We have to prevent this decision from having a devastating impact on women’s lives.
How are we going to do that? By immediately supporting Planned Parenthood teams of organizers and advocates that are already on the ground in key states across the nation. And by reaching out and asking hundreds of thousands of people to immediately express their outrage over abortion bans that undermine women’s health and safety. We can start by taking a simple pledge one that we will share with senators, governors, House members, and state legislators across the nation:
I want to send a message to every politician who thinks the Supreme Court’s reckless decision is a green light to endanger women’s health: We won’t let you get away with it!
SIGN OUR PLANNED PARENTHOOD PLEDGE RIGHT NOW!
Our opponents can hardly contain themselves. The Associated Press reports that South Dakota anti-abortion hardliner Leslie Unruh was elated by the ruling: “I’m running and jumping in the air. I’m going to tell people, ‘This should give you energy. Make sure you get to your capital and introduce some bills.”
We’ve got to put anti-choice politicians and extremists on notice. They need to know that, just because the Supreme Court has upheld the federal abortion ban, we won’t tolerate them interjecting themselves into women’s personal medical decisions. If they act to undermine women’s health, we won’t let them get away with it.
SIGN OUR PLANNED PARENTHOOD PLEDGE RIGHT NOW!
We’ll be counting on you to stand with us in the days and weeks ahead. Right now, the single most important thing you can do is help ignite an immediate display of national outrage. Sign our pledge right now and pass the pledge on to as many people as you possibly can.
Thank you,
Cecile Richards
