NEW YORK -- NewsChannel 4 learned of a massive system failure that affected all BlackBerry users in the western hemisphere late Tuesday.
The RIM Company, which stands for Research In Motion, developed BlackBerry technology and said its infrastructure failed around 8 p.m. Tuesday and was until about 7 a.m. Wenesday.
E-mails were not being pushed to portable blackberry devices.
Officials with RIM said they tried to reset the system and they were concerned that the backlog of data, which could cause a bigger problem as it rushes through now that the system appears to be online.
RIM officials said messages would be sent out in stages so the system does not crash.
RIM officials recommend all who depend on their BlackBerry as a major way of communication should make some back-up plans in case more problems occur Wednesday morning.

As far as I can tell, this is still an issue as my BlackBerry still isn't sending/receiving emails.

With any luck I’ll be able to avoid being given a Crackberry by The Corporation. Hate getting email while on The Throne.

Ours are up and running this morning. I’m in the SE. Heard this on CNBC this morning around 6:00 AM. As of 7:00 AM I was receiving and sending fine.

I don't think it's a sunspot-related problem:
"The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet to unsettled on April 18 due to effects from CH265. A high speed stream from CH266 could cause unsettled to minor storm conditions on April 19-21."

I love getting email wherever I am. I’d give up phone functionality before email.

Note to users: Filing electronic tax returns on your Blackberry at the last minute is not a recommended practice. ;)

I just got a Treo and I love it. I’ve been using Palm products for years.

TREO = Time to REbOoot
I had so many issues with my Treo rebooting and dropping calls (cellular provided through Cingular) that I had to switch over to a BlackBerry (Verizon).

Nope - had three (each crashed for no apparent reason) before I finally decided that I’m just not important enough that people have to be able to get ahold of me 24/7. FREEDOM!

I live in rural Missouri and travel the mid continent quite a bit on business. Verizon is the only service that goes everywhere I do.

I couldn’t get on the internet on my Blackberry last night. I first noticed it around 8 pm. I didn’t try to send an email though.

We got this earlier from RIM:
- Outage began at 08:11 PM EST on 4/17/2007
- Outage affected all users in the Americas
- Users in the other global geographies, including Europe and AP, were not affected
- Users from the Americas roaming internationally using their native SIMs were affected (GRX roaming)
- Messaging, PIN to PIN, and management capabilities were unavailable during outage
- Users may have received messages intermittently throughout the night
