EMILY Hilscher was only just starting out in life. Aged 19, she had an "outgoing, friendly and helpful" personality, her friends said.
The girl who called herself "the Pixie" was the first to die.
There were contradictory reports as to whether Miss Hilscher was in a relationship or dating Cho Seung-Hui, the man who killed her and 31 other people at Virginia Tech.
One comment on the website Facebook.com, where dozens of photographs and messages of condolence were published, seemed to refer to this, saying: "I'm sorry that she ever got involved with this guy." However, sources close to the family said she was not Cho's girlfriend.
The first-year student, the daughter of Eric and Elizabeth Hilscher, of Woodville, Virginia, had worked in a vet's office before studying animal and poultry sciences at Virginia Tech. "She cared about them [animals] her whole life," said John McCarthy, a family friend. Another friend, Will Nachless, said: "She was very outgoing, friendly and helpful."
Another friend said: "She was so filled with life and always had something wonderful to say, or was always making me smile."
The second victim, Ryan Clark, 22, of Martinez, Georgia, was studying biology and English and was a popular member of Virginia Tech's marching band.
He was a student adviser at West Ambler Johnston Hall, the dormitory where Miss Hilscher was killed at about 7:15am on Monday, and was known to friends as "Stack".

She probably just tried to be nice to him. Very sad. He should never have been admitted to VT.
And she had every right to say no that she no lonfer wanted to see him.
This is very sad.
Ross Alameddine, 20, of Saugus, Massachusetts, was in a French class when he was shot. His mother, Lynnette, said she was furious about how victims' relatives were notified of the shooting. "It happened in the morning and I did not hear until a quarter to 11 at night," she said. "That was outrageous."
I understand she's upset, and I'm very sorry for her loss, but she doesn't know the circumstances. Did her son have an ID on him? If not, that could present a problem. And it isn't as though LEOs didn't have their hands full.
Agree,,the world is full of sweet girls who “feel sorry” for the outsider, for the reject, for the weird who have no friends. These sweet girls are nice to them.
My suspicion is that she was nice to him, out of pity, and he distorted that.
I agree with you. According to what people are saying about her she sounds like a sweet girl who was very friendly. To a twisted mind, just saying hello would constitute a relationship.
My oldest daughter knew Ryan Clark “Stack”.......
He used to hang out with the Civil Air Patrol kids when he wasn’t in band.
A bright kid with a great future....
Well they say she liked animals and Cho sure was one.
BTW, this was back in High School for my daughter in 2002, not at VT...
It seems obvious that Cho had been getting up early so as to observe her returning from having spent the night "elsewhere". I imagine he observed her current heart throb "dropping" her off around 6:30-6:45 AM. He approached her, argued with her that she was HIS, she was involved in "debauchery" and he wouldn't allow it!
He leaves, returns with a gun retrieved from somewhere (or he had it on him all the time) and kills her to "teach" her not to get involved in "debauchery". Then shoots the witness RA, and flees. Returns to somewhere on campus and figures in his warped little brain that he's going down for the count so why not take as many of these kids "debaucherers" with him. Around 10AM he starts killing and then as they all do, takes the cowardly way out and shoots himself.
That's what I had first thought. Schizophrenia usually hits around the 'young adult years. doesn't it?
<< Cho was fixated on her. >>
<< He had been getting up early for days prior and leaving the dorm in the dark. He was stalking her. If accounts are accurate she was “dropped” off at her dorm early that morning. >>
Are you just speculating that Cho was fixated on her (which may well be) or has this been reported somewhere? I haven’t read where it was established factually that the two even knew each other or that she was a girl that he was stalking (only that he was stalking someone).
If you’re speculating that he was fixated on her because she was the first one shot and was shot in her dorm, I think that’s perfectly legitimate, or are you saying this has been reported as fact?
Bill Bennett on Fox and Friends just said someone like Stack should have had the option to carry. Great point.
Right, like immigration authorities can do supernaturally accurate psych profiles of 8-year olds arriving in the country with their legally immigrating parents, in hope of excluding future homocidal maniacs.
Why not?
Great point. We should do our best to screen out criminal and dangerously mentally ill legal immigrants but there isn’t much chance of figuring out that an eight year old will become a dangerous schizopheric .
I suspect you are right- she was just raised to be “nice” to social rejects like Cho, a loner who took any act of kindness (even a smile or friendly word) as a sign she wanted to be his girl friend.
I had a similar experience in college, when I was a freshman and was friendly to an odd grad student who asked me to dance at a mixer and finally, after being obssessively called over and over again, had to ask him to leave me alone.
He committed suicide in a cold lonely orchard on campus. I felt a pang of guilt but then went on with my own life. I had not thought about that for many years, until the events at VT this week.
Anyone can post anything to Facebook. That's not a credible source - for all you know, I could have written that. (I didn't, but that's not my point.) That doesn't mean he has a credible basis of knowledge.
It sure looks like he was. They interviewed his twin brother and his sister in Georgia. Just looks like a great family with wonderful, smart, and caring kids. Perfect kids. It’s such a shame.
