The deadly university rampage in Virginia that killed 33 people sent shock waves around the world Tuesday with newspapers and talk shows delving into the American psyche and raising questions about lax gun controls in the United States.
Australian Prime Minister John Howard said the shooting underscored the problems of a U.S. gun culture, but the gun control debate echoed loudest across Europe, which has some of the toughest gun laws in the world.
Prime Minister Tony Blair offered his condolences to the victims families.
I would like to express on behalf of Britain and the British people our profound sadness at what has happened and to send the American people and most especially, of course, the families of the victims, our sympathy and our prayers, Blair said.
Most expressed shock at the shooting but few said they were surprised criticizing the availability of guns in the United States, lax gun controls and the number of Americans who cling to the constitutional right that allows them to bear arms.

yeah and we won’t be under Sharia Law soon
They cannot wait until we lose all our rights, so they can walk right across our borders and take control.
Switzerland , Israel and Finland have very high per cap[ita rates of gun ownership and low homicide rates.
While this sort of things always happens after a tragedy like this, its always frustrating to see these - well lets be charitable and say “misguided” - people thinking taking away guns will solve it. Up here in Canada the fact that guns are almost completely impossible to get didn’t stop Kimveer Gill from shooting up Dawson College (although thankfully only one person was killed). My mom and I actually stopped talking to each other last night because we were arguing so much. (she thinks all guns are evil)
Maybe if more of the ‘rest of the world’ kept their citizens armed we would not have to spend so much time and money coming to their assistance.
This was an Asian killer. Americans were the victims.
Islamists and partisans blow up 200 at once in Baghdad and where are the so Cosmopolitan moralists?
Wait - John Howard? That’s disappointing.
If this were even remotely true the gunman would have been shot and killed by somebody long before he massacred the 31 students. The fact is that we are an anti-gun, anti-2nd Amendment country and that is why no one was able to stop a single gunman from committing mass murder.
The “culture of victimhood and always blame others instead of taking responsibility” could also be blamed.
Banning foreigners would have saved 32 lives. I think that would be a good place to start. For the most part, the vast, vast majority of Americans handle the availability of guns in a responsible manner.
In any event, those 32 lives serve as a reminder that freedom is not free and the cost of freedom is sometimes high. Imagine what the power hungry democRats would do to us without the right to bear arms. History is filled with horror stories of nations of people who lost that right.
Ask Tony Blair what his countries gun crime rate did AFTER the banned ownership of firearms.
And countries the size of the smallest US states.
Any counrty of our size is bound to have a lot more crime than the average naion.
The same Constitutional rights the libs loudly demand we confer upon captured terrorists.
Our Founders wrote that Constitution for a people entitled to individual liberty and capable of protecting individual rights against government dictatorship. Sometimes in a nation of 300 million there are individuals who abuse their liberties or who - gasp - break laws. We don’t need to look to the UN to tell us what to do about it.
More echos of pre-WWII. The same ilk were decrying US gun culture back then, pretty much gave up all their guns, and then begged us to ship them guns when the Nazis came roaring out of Germany.
Well, this time, Eurowimps, you can go right straight to Hell when that happens again, with Islamists in the place of Nazis.
We have a horrible crime here, and you need to validate your superiority with this cr@p, Eurotrash? You ignorant gutless wimps. BTW, how are your women doing, you know, the ones being raped disproportionately by “youths”? Why don’t you take a stand? Oh, that’s right, you don’t believe in fighting, even against that horror. You want dialog and to bury your heads in the sand, all while feeling superior about yourselves vs. us uncivilized people who believe in the quaint idea of “rights.” And even those of you who have a clue have been forced by the vast majority of Eurowimps to give up any means of defense, haven’t you?
PS In the foregoing, “Europe” refers to old Europe, with some exceptions (e.g., the Swiss).
And they are all just busting their asses to get here. Then they join the ACLU and try their damnedest to turn the USA into the same sort of living hell they just left. Somehow it just don’t seem right, does it?
European criticism of our “gun culture” [which happens to be one reason all of Europe is not speaking German] and their call for American gun control would hold more credibility if they would call for Islamic sword control after each beheading of a so called infidel.
