Virginia Tech Students Doomed by Gun Ban [a 'must read']

I just found out about the massacre at Virginia Tech.

The thing that makes me most angry is that the dead students were penned up like sheep for the slaughter, in a ridiculous "gun-free zone." A better phrase would be "self-defense-free zone," or maybe "danger-free zone for armed criminals."

I have a maxim that says that in a politcal corruption story if the accused is not identified by politcal affiliation then he is a Democrat (or worse). We may be able to add if the shooter or SUV-rampage driver is not readily identified then he is most likely a Muzzie and they are working on explaining away the radical background.

I heard the guy tell Brit that the problem was the “prevalence of guns in this country.” My thought was “there was only one gun on campus today.”

I don’t think they have enough paint to cover this canvas if this was ‘random jihad’.

I’m not sure that I would want 4000 teenage students running around armed

Considering that the minimum age to have a CCW is 21 your argument is pretty stupid.

When in jr high school, my father and his fellow shooting club members used to store their shotguns along with the ammo in their school lockers until after classes, whereupon they had their weekly shoot in the school basement rifle range. They used to walk to school carrying their shotguns, and walk home after their meeting.

Not one boy, aged 12 to 5, ever used their shotgun in anything other than an appropriate manner. This club existed up until the 60s in that school.

When held to appropriate standards, most people with guns do the right things with them.

What you describe is either a prison or a police state. Neither of which would stop the madman. He could force someone at gunpoint (remember, NO ONE in the area is carrying a gun), to open the dorm or building. Lexan covered walkways won't make a difference since he could just enter them. No not everyone would or even should carry a gun. But It makes no sense to "restrict the availability" of guns. In my other post, as I said, in the hood, the criminals don't give a damn about the law.

P.S. I went to school in an "inner-city" high school that was fenced and "secured" including security cameras and riot gates. It sucked. And kids still managed to sneek on and off campus. A police state will not make you safer, and will in fact fall at some point to revolution.

“I have mixed feelings on this one. I?m not sure that I would want 4000 teenage students running around armed.”

If the government policy is to have a disarmed society then it is the government’s RESPONSIBILITY to protect its citizens.

Time after time it has been proven that governments fail miserably(as in this case) because it doesn’t have the power nor the will to do what a free and responsible individual can do for themselves.

Governments only disable the law abiding, not the criminal or insane.+

You’ve never seen the gang bangers in Los Angeles.....better watch some movies. Your little pee gun, no matter the size, wouldn’t stand a chance against them. They would shoot you, you mother, father, etc before you could make a move. Like I said, I am against gun control but not on campus. More guns is not the answer.....getting rid of the people that do this is the only answer. Study security measures some time and you’ll see some answers. All you have to do is have the guts and the will to put them in place.....which it doesn’t sound like you would be willing to since it would infringe on some of your “rights”. But at the same time you want security.....wierd.

Quit being foolish and come up with answers and ideas.

How about allowing law abiding adults to protect themselves?

Today’s Lesson #1-

Unarmed Citizens Are Dead Citizens.

Easily victimized by Mass Murderers, criminals, or Liberal Socialists...

Believe it or not, Judge Napolitano said essentially the same thing on John Gibson's show this afternoon.

VA's CCW law makes it relatively easy for a non-felon adult with a clean record to get a CC permit, but VA Tech's politically correct "no-guns on campus" policy doesn't allow a student or faculty member to bring a gun onto campus even with a state concealed carry permit. Therefore the deranged shooter had a free fire zone full of helpless unarmed sheep to prey on until the cops arrived and he shot himself rather than be captured.

How clueless does a university administrator have to be to NOT KNOW that a homicidal maniac intent on killing as many students as possible and himself isn't going to obey a politically correct "no guns on campus" rule? Does he or she actually think that a homicidal madman will be deterred from bringing his gun on campus to kill dozens of students and himself because he doesn't want to risk being arrested on a relatively minor misdemeanor or 3rd degree felony charge? PC insanity is literally going to be the death of us all.

Has anyone heard the identity of the gunman on the news? Any identity or motive? I swear the news has been totally silent on that.

An unidentified man is arrested. It is unclear what role he played in the shooting. Sources in University Relations told the student newspaper there may have been two arrests

Welcome to FR. You’ll not find a lot of support for your views.

Yes, in today’s world things do go bad real fast, and it’s usually in situations where no one else is armed, like it did here.

So what would you suggest to prevent this sort of thing again? A gun ban obviously isn’t the answer because it sure didn’t keep one out of the hands of this guy.

What then?

“Oh, this isn’t the worst. Virginia Tech not only disarmed the student in question, they also fought against a bill introduced in the legislature as a result of that incident that would have allowed students and faculty members with a CHP to carry on campus.

The bill died in committee.”

“House Bill 1572 didn’t get through the House Committee on Militia, Police and Public Safety. It died Monday in the subcommittee stage, the first of several hurdles bills must overcome before becoming laws.

...

Virginia Tech spokesman Larry Hincker was happy to hear the bill was defeated. “I’m sure the university community is appreciative of the General Assembly’s actions because this will help parents, students, faculty and visitors feel safe on our campus.”

Well, Mr. Hincker - are you still happy? Militia, Police, and Public Safety Committee - still think you did the right thing?

Gun bill gets shot down by panel
HB 1572, which would have allowed handguns on college campuses, died in subcommittee.

By Greg Esposito
381-1675

A bill that would have given college students and employees the right to carry handguns on campus died with nary a shot being fired in the General Assembly.

House Bill 1572 didn’t get through the House Committee on Militia, Police and Public Safety. It died Monday in the subcommittee stage, the first of several hurdles bills must overcome before becoming laws.

The bill was proposed by Del. Todd Gilbert, R-Shenandoah County, on behalf of the Virginia Citizens Defense League. Gilbert was unavailable Monday and spokesman Gary Frink would not comment on the bill’s defeat other than to say the issue was dead for this General Assembly session.

Virginia Tech spokesman Larry Hincker was happy to hear the bill was defeated. “I’m sure the university community is appreciative of the General Assembly’s actions because this will help parents, students, faculty and visitors feel safe on our campus.”

Del. Dave Nutter, R-Christiansburg, would not comment Monday because he was not part of the subcommittee that discussed the bill.

Most universities in Virginia require students and employees, other than police, to check their guns with police or campus security upon entering campus. The legislation was designed to prohibit public universities from making “rules or regulations limiting or abridging the ability of a student who possesses a valid concealed handgun permit ... from lawfully carrying a concealed handgun.”

The legislation allowed for exceptions for participants in athletic events, storage of guns in residence halls and military training programs.

Last spring a Virginia Tech student was disciplined for bringing a handgun to class, despite having a concealed handgun permit. Some gun owners questioned the university’s authority, while the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police came out against the presence of guns on campus.

In June, Tech’s governing board approved a violence prevention policy reiterating its ban on students or employees carrying guns and prohibiting visitors from bringing them into campus facilities.
