"Why are there so many shootings in America?"
Telegraph (UK) ^ | 4/16/07 | n/a

Posted on 04/16/2007 12:52:18 PM PDT by kiriath_jearim

More than 20 people have been killed by a gunman rampaging through a dormitory and classroom at Virginia Tech University in the United States.

This is the third major shooting in America this year. In February five people were killed by an 18-year-old gunman in a shopping centre in Salt Lake City and three others died on the same day when a Philadelphia office worker turned on his colleagues.

Last year, five young girls were killed at an Amish school in Pennsylvania. In 1999, at Columbine High School in Colorado two students killed 12 others before killing themselves.

Similar shootings have happened elsewhere - in Erfurt, Germany, in 2002, in Osaka, Japan, in 2001, and in Dunblane, Scotland, in 1996 - but they are far more common in America.

Why do you think this is? Is it because guns are so readily available and the right to bear arms is enshrined in the constitution? Or is there some deeper social problem that encourages Americans to use firearms, often against their fellow students or colleagues?

Is there something in US history which would explain the phenomenon? What more can be done to protect Americans from such dangers? Why do these tragedies not happen more often elsewhere?

Stress builds up in America, due to our lack of fatal soccer riots.

Throw a bunch of people into a ‘melting pot’ and you get a pretty rough place especially if some of the ingredients are bad to begin with and have little chance of getting better.

Why do all the world wars start in Europe? What is in the water that turns them into blind followers of maniac dictactors?

In a huge country, we do have homicidal psychopaths. But despite what the foreign media would have people believe, America's streets by and large are not awash in blood. Yeah we do rack up large body counts at times yet the amazing thing is how infrequent these events are for most Americans. America is a heck of a lot safer than most parts of the world where life and limb are in constant jeopardy.

Yup.

It’s one of those things nobody wants to admit, and nobody likes to hear.

“Diverse” societies have more of these types of occurrences than more uniform ones. I’m not suggesting we become a monolithic, single-race nation, but it wouldn’t hurt to try to unite ourselves and stop with the “multicultural” bullsh*t. I’m not saying that all of the shootings are a direct result of that, but overall violent crime rates seem to be linked to it.

2 things. Anger and lack of moral values.
A person who has nothing in his head that says “this is wrong, look at the suffering you will cause, you will go to jail” and who is angry may just kill.
Liberals are the reason why some people have no conscience that tells them the consequences of their actions.
Liberals are the reason why some people are angry all the time.

What more can be done to protect Americans from such dangers?

The D.C. circuit court just helped a bit - let the people defend themselves instead of being unarmed victims.

Perhaps 40 plus years of Johnson’s great social programs, which led to the PC Movement, which led to families turning away from God, which led to don’t blame the child, blame the lack of Ritalin, which led to always praise children, which led to no anger management learning skills for the children, which also led to no personal responsibility.

But do no blame the gun!!!!

Because we’re a big country, 300 million people is bound to include some serious nutburgers. Also we’re a wealthy country so those nutburgers can generally afford good equipment to do their nutty thing with. I’m sure China and India have many nutburgers that can’t afford the necessary tools to do a serious rampage.

That reminds me....I forgot to pick-up some ammo when the gun vendor was driving down my street yesterday.

It’s just our way of letting off steam, doncha know.

Why are thee so many suicide bombers in Iraq?

A good many of these mass shootings, by the way, have “Islam” written all over them. Maybe not real Muslims, but done in their name.
